Christ, the image of God and firstborn of all creation
Colossians 1 opens with Paul's prayer for a church he had never visited, and it builds toward one of the highest statements about Christ in the New Testament. This section walks through that prayer, what God has already done for us, and what it means that Christ is the image of the invisible God and the firstborn of all creation.
Paul does not pray that the Colossians would get more information. He prays that they would be filled with a full, personal knowledge of God's will, and that this knowledge would show up in how they walk.
Filled with epignosis: a personal, full knowledge of his will, not knowledge that puffs up
Walk worthily of the Lord Ephesians 4:11 Thessalonians 2:122 Thessalonians 1:11
Pray for the church to have spiritual wisdom and discernment
Colossians 1:9–10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
9For this cause, we also, from the day when we heard [of you], cease not, in your behalf, praying and asking—that ye may be filled unto the personal knowledge of his will, in all spiritual wisdom and discernment, 10So as to walk worthily of the Lord, unto all pleasing, in every good work, bearing fruit, and growing in the personal knowledge of God,
Berean Standard Bible
9For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
Ephesians 4:1
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1I exhort you, therefore, I, the prisoner in the Lord, to walk in a manner worthy of the calling wherewith ye were called:—
Berean Standard Bible
1As a prisoner in the Lord, then, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received:
1 Thessalonians 2:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12To the end ye might be walking in a manner worthy of God, who is calling you unto his own kingdom and glory,
Berean Standard Bible
12encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
2 Thessalonians 1:11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
11Unto which end, we are also praying continually for you, that our God may count, you, worthy of your calling, and fulfil every good-pleasure of goodness and work of faith, with power,—
Berean Standard Bible
11To this end, we always pray for you, that our God will count you worthy of His calling, and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire and work of faith,

Empowered and made sufficient
Colossians 1:11–12
Rotherham renders verse 11 "with all power being empowered." The supply is unlimited. What limits us is how open we are to receive it. Verse 12 is in the past tense: God has already made us sufficient for our share of the inheritance.
"With all power being empowered": the only limit is our openness to receive
God has made us sufficient (past tense) to share the inheritance of the saints
Joint heirs who will rule and reign with Christ in the Millennium
Reject the enemy's "insufficiency messages"
Colossians 1:11–12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
11With all power, being empowered, according to the grasp of his glory, unto all endurance and long-suffering with joy, 12Giving thanks unto the Father that hath made you sufficient for your share in the inheritance of the saints in the light,
Berean Standard Bible
11being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have full endurance and patience, and joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.

This is a change of kingdoms, not a self-improvement plan. We were taken out from under the authority of darkness and placed in the kingdom of the Son of his love.

Redemption: bought back out of Satan's pawn shop
Colossians 1:13–14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
13Who hath rescued us out of the authority of the darkness, and translated [us] into the kingdom of the Son of his love; 14In whom, we have our redemption—the remission of our sins,—

13He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Christ, the image of the invisible God
Colossians 1:15
God is invisible and immortal, so God did not die on the cross. The one who died is the one who perfectly shows us what the invisible God is like. When we look at Jesus, we see the Father's heart.

John 12:44–50
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
44And, Jesus, cried aloud, and said—He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me; 45And, he that vieweth me, vieweth him that sent me. 46I, a light, into the world have come, that, no one who believeth on me, in darkness, should abide. 47And, if anyone shall hearken unto my sayings, and not guard them, I, am not judging him; for I came not that I might judge the world, but that I might save the world. 48He that setteth me aside, and receiveth not my sayings, hath that which is to judge him: The word that I spake, that, will judge him, in the last day. 49Because, I, out of myself, spake not, but, the Father who sent me, hath, himself, given me commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50And I know that, his commandment, is, life age-abiding; The things, therefore, which I speak, just as the Father hath told me, so, I speak.
Berean Standard Bible
44Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in Me does not believe in Me alone, but in the One who sent Me. 45And whoever sees Me sees the One who sent Me. 46I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in Me should remain in darkness. 47As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48There is a judge for the one who rejects Me and does not receive My words: The word that I have spoken will judge him on the last day. 49I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me has commanded Me what to say and how to say it. 50And I know that His command leads to eternal life. So I speak exactly what the Father has told Me to say.”
John 8:10–11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10And lifting himself up, Jesus said unto her—Woman, where are they? Hath, no one, condemned thee? 11And, she, said—No one, Sir! And Jesus said—Neither do, I, condemn thee,—be going thy way: Henceforth, be sinning, no more.]]
Berean Standard Bible
10Then Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?” 11“No one, Lord,” she answered. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and sin no more.”

Firstborn of all creation means the new creation
2 Corinthians 5:16–18
"Firstborn of all creation" is not about Genesis. It points to the new creation that began in Christ. Anyone in him is part of that new creation, and we stop sizing people up by their natural lives.
Knowing no one after the flesh
Reconciled to God; begotten from above
2 Corinthians 5:16–18
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16So that, we, henceforth, know, no one, after the flesh: if we have even been gaining, after the flesh, a knowledge of Christ, 17On the contrary, now, no longer, are we gaining it. So that, if any one is in Christ, there is a new creation! the old things, have passed away,—Lo! they have become new! 18The all things, moreover, are of God,—who hath reconciled us unto himself, through Christ, and hath given, unto us, the reconciling ministry:—
Berean Standard Bible
16So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come! 18All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
Heaven has received Christ until the times of restoration. History is moving toward a goal: every enemy brought under his feet, the last of them death.
Every enemy being brought under Christ's feet
Acts 3:21
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
21Unto whom, indeed, heaven must needs give welcome, until the times of the due establishment of all things, of which God hath spoken through the mouth of his holy age-past prophets.
Berean Standard Bible
21Heaven must take Him in until the time comes for the restoration of all things, which God announced long ago through His holy prophets.
1 Corinthians 15:25–26
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
25For he must needs reign, until he shall put all his enemies under his feet: 26As a last enemy, death, is to be destroyed;
Berean Standard Bible
25For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Warnings for perilous times
2 Timothy 3:1
The concerns raised for 2024 are named plainly. They do not shake the foundation. Perilous times confirm that prophecy is accurate, and Jesus is still Lord.

All things created in Christ
Colossians 1:16–20
The "all things" here are thrones, lordships, and principalities: the spiritual realm. Paul is describing the order of the new creation in Christ, not the Genesis creation. All the fullness was pleased to dwell in him, and through him all things are reconciled.
Thrones, lordships, principalities: the spiritual realm, not the Genesis creation
All the fullness of God pleased to dwell in him; all things reconciled through him
Colossians 1:16–20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16Because, in him, were created all things in the heavens and upon the earth, the things seen and the things unseen, whether thrones or lordships or principalities or authorities,—they all, through him and for him, have been created, 17And, he, is before all, and, they all, in him, hold together; 18And, he, is the head of the body, the assembly, Who is the beginning, Firstborn from among the dead, in order that, he, might become, in all things, himself, pre-eminent;— 19Because, in him, was all the fullness well pleased to dwell, 20And, through him, fully to reconcile all things unto him, making peace through the blood of his cross,— [through him] —whether the things upon the earth or the things in the heavens;
Berean Standard Bible
16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence. 19For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, 20and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.

Already reconciled
Romans 5:10–112 Corinthians 5:18–20
Reconciliation is a finished work. Much of our striving is an attempt to reach a place where we already stand. Because we have been reconciled, we boast in God, and we carry the word of reconciliation to others.
Stop trying to get somewhere you already are
Boasting in God through Jesus Christ
The ministry and word of reconciliation; ambassadors for Christ
Romans 5:10–11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10For, if being enemies we were reconciled unto God through the death of his Son, much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11And, not only, so, but are even boasting in God, through our Lord Jesus [Christ],—through whom, now, the reconciliation we have received.
Berean Standard Bible
10For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life! 11Not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18–20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
18The all things, moreover, are of God,—who hath reconciled us unto himself, through Christ, and hath given, unto us, the reconciling ministry:— 19How that, God, was in Christ, reconciling, a world, unto himself, not reckoning, unto them, their offences,—and hath put, in us, the reconciling discourse. 20In behalf of Christ, therefore, are we ambassadors,—as if God were beseeching through us: we entreat, in behalf of Christ,—be reconciled unto God!
Berean Standard Bible
18All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God.

Head of the body, firstborn from the dead
Colossians 1:18
The firstborn of creation and the firstborn from the dead are the same truth seen from two sides. Through his resurrection the last Adam opened the new creation, and God marked out many brothers to be shaped into his image.
Firstborn of creation and firstborn from the dead are connected

Romans 8:3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3For, what was impossible by the law in that it was weak through the flesh, God, by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin, condemned sin in the flesh,

3For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh,
Romans 8:29

29For, whom he fore-approved, he also fore-appointed to be conformed unto the image of his Son, that he might be firstborn among many brethren,—

29For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers.

Berean Standard Bible
22Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to myriads of angels 23in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the firstborn, enrolled in heaven. You have come to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

Section 02 of 09
"You are my Son; this day I have begotten you"
What does it mean that Jesus is the firstborn, and when was he "begotten"? This section traces the phrase from Psalm 2 through Hebrews and Acts, and shows how Scripture ties it to his birth and his resurrection, and how it leads to the name above every name.
The firstborn carried a double portion and the privileges of the family line. Esau traded all of it for one meal. The story shows what the birthright is worth and how easily it can be despised.
The firstborn's double inheritance and privileges
Genesis 25:29–33
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
29And Jacob had boiled pottage,—when Esau came in from the field, he, being famished. 30So Esau said unto Jacob. Do let me devour some of the red—this red, for, famished, I am. For this cause, was his name called Edom. 31And Jacob said,—Come sell, just now, thy birthright unto me. 32And Esau said, Here am I, on the point of dying,—wherefore, then, should I, have, a birthright? 33And Jacob said, Come swear to me just now! And he sware to him,—and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Berean Standard Bible
29One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished. 30He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.) 31“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied. 32“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?” 33“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright.
Deuteronomy 21:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17but the true firstborn the son of her that is hated, shall he treat as firstborn by giving him double out of all that is found to be his,—for, he, is the beginning of his strength, his, is the right of the firstborn.
Berean Standard Bible
17Instead, he must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of his unloved wife, by giving him a double portion of all that he has. For that son is the firstfruits of his father’s strength; the right of the firstborn belongs to him.

Begotten in the womb of Mary
Matthew 1:20
Scripture uses the language of begetting, not only conceiving. The Most High overshadowed Mary, and what was begotten in her was of the Holy Spirit. God is the Father of Jesus in a direct sense.
Begetting, not merely conceiving; God overshadowed Mary
Matthew 1:20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20But, when, these things, he had pondered, lo! a messenger of the Lord, by dream, appeared to him, saying,—Joseph, son of David! do not fear to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for, that which, in her, hath been begotten, is of [the], Holy, Spirit.
Berean Standard Bible
20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews says Jesus became superior to the angels and inherited a more excellent name. Acts 13 ties the words "this day I have begotten you" directly to the resurrection. The name he inherited is Jesus, meaning "Yahweh saves."
Ginomai: becoming superior to the angels
He inherited a name: Jesus means Yahweh saves
The phrase is tied directly to the resurrection
Psalm 2:7
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
7Let me tell of a decree,—Yahweh, hath said unto me, My son, thou art, I, to-day, have begotten thee:
Berean Standard Bible
7I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.
Hebrews 1:4–5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
4By so much becoming superior to the messengers, by as much as, going beyond them, he hath inherited a more distinguished name. 5For unto which of the messengers said he at any time—My Son, art, thou, I, this day have begotten thee? and again—I, will become, his father, and, he, shall become my Son?
Berean Standard Bible
4So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. 5For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be His Father, and He will be My Son”?
Hebrews 5:5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
5Thus, also the Christ, glorified not himself to become a high-priest, but he that spake unto him—My Son, art, thou, I, this day, have begotten thee;
Berean Standard Bible
5So also Christ did not take upon Himself the glory of becoming a high priest, but He was called by the One who said to Him: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.”
Acts 13:33–34
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
33That God hath fulfilled, the same, for our children, by raising up Jesus: as also, in the second psalm, it is written—My son, art, thou: I, this day, have begotten thee. 34And, in that he raised him from among the dead, no more destined to return unto corruption, on this wise hath he spoken—I will give unto you the faithful lovingkindnesses of David.
Berean Standard Bible
33He has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.’ 34In fact, God raised Him from the dead, never to see decay. As He has said: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’
John 17:11–12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
11And, no longer, am I in the world, and, they, are, in the world,—and, I, unto thee, am coming. Holy Father! Keep them in thy name which thou hast given me, that they may be one, as, we. 12When I was with them, I, kept them in thy name which thou hast given me,—And I kept watch, and, none from among them, went the destruction,—save the son of destruction, that, the Scripture, might be fulfilled.
Berean Standard Bible
11I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one. 12While I was with them, I protected and preserved them by Your name, the name You gave Me. Not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.

Declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection
Romans 1:3–4
According to the flesh Jesus came from David's line. By the resurrection he was marked out as the Son of God with power. In him a new spiritual race begins.
"Declared": marked out, like a horizon

Firstfruits from among the dead
1 Corinthians 15:20–22Hebrews 2:9–10
Firstfruits means a harvest is coming. "Firstborn" assumes there will be more sons. Jesus is the princely leader who brings many sons to glory.
In Adam all die; in Christ all made alive
"Firstborn" implies more sons; the princely leader
1 Corinthians 15:20–22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20But, now, hath Christ been raised from among the dead,—a firstfruit of them who have fallen asleep; 21For, since indeed, through a man, came death, through a man, also cometh the raising of the dead; 22For, just as, in the Adam, all die, so, also, in the Christ, shall all be made alive.
Berean Standard Bible
20But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
Hebrews 2:9–10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
9But, Jesus, made some little less than messengers, we do behold: by reason of the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, to the end that, by favour of God, in behalf of every one, he might taste of death. 10For it was becoming in him—For the sake of whom are the all things, and by means of whom are the all things,—when, many sons, unto glory, he would lead, The Princely Leader of their salvation, through sufferings, to make perfect.
Berean Standard Bible
9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
6
Christ suffered and was made perfect
Hebrews 5:8–9
The first Adam knew what he was doing and chose to sin. The last Adam faced real temptation and refused. His suffering was real, and through it he was made perfect.
The first Adam knowingly sinned; the last Adam refused to sin
Hebrews 5:8–9
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
8Even though he was a son, yet learned, from what things he suffered, obedience; 9And, being made perfect, became, to all them that obey him, Author of salvation age-abiding;
Berean Standard Bible
8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered. 9And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him
7
Origins: the first man of the earth, the second man of heaven
1 Corinthians 15:47–48John 1:6John 6:31
"Of heaven" speaks of origin. John the Baptist was a man "sent from God," and the manna was "bread out of heaven." Each came from God without falling from the sky. In the same way, we need a new origin: we must be begotten from above.
"Of heaven" speaks of origin
We must be begotten from above
1 Corinthians 15:47–48
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
47The first man, is of the ground, earthy, the second man, is, of heaven: 48As, the man of earth, such, also, the men of earth, and, as, the man of heaven, such, also, the men of heaven;
Berean Standard Bible
47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven.
John 1:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6There arose a man, sent from God, whose name was, John:
Berean Standard Bible
6There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John.
John 6:31

31Our fathers, did eat, the manna, in the desert,—just as it is written: Bread out of heaven, he gave them to eat.
Berean Standard Bible
31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
We bore the image of the earthy man. Now we are begotten of incorruptible seed and will bear the image of the heavenly. The veil has been torn, and Jesus has gone ahead of us as our forerunner.
Begotten of incorruptible seed; the veil torn; our forerunner
1 Corinthians 15:49
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
49And, even as we have borne the image of the man of earth, let us also bear the image of the man of heaven.
Berean Standard Bible
49And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man.
1 Peter 1:23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
23Having been regenerated—Not out of corruptible seed, but incorruptible—through means of the word of a Living and Abiding God;
Berean Standard Bible
23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
Hebrews 6:19–20

19Which we have, as an anchor of the soul, both secure and firm, and entering into the interior of the veil: 20Where a forerunner in our behalf hath entered, even Jesus, who, according to the rank of Melchizedek, hath become, a high-priest unto times age-abiding.
Berean Standard Bible
19We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20where Jesus our forerunner has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.

A body of the soul and a body of the spirit
1 Corinthians 15:42–45James 2:26
Paul contrasts a natural body, a body of the soul, with a spiritual body. The same contrast shows up in faith: a faith that lives only in the soul is dead, while faith born of the spirit is alive.
Dead faith and living faith
1 Corinthians 15:42–45
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
42Thus, also the resurrection of the dead: it is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption, 43It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory, it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power, 44It is sown a body of the soul, it is raised a body of the spirit; if there is a body of the soul, there is also of the spirit:— 45Thus, also, it is written—The first man, Adam, became, a living soul, the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
Berean Standard Bible
42So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable. 43It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.
James 2:26
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
26Just as, the body, apart from spirit, is dead, so, our faith also, apart from works, is dead.
Berean Standard Bible
26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
3
Our new bodies
2 Corinthians 5:1–41 John 3:2
We long to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven. When he appears we will be like him, because the last Adam has become a life-giving spirit.
Christ has become a life-giving spirit
2 Corinthians 5:1–4
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1For we know that—if, our earthly tent-dwelling, should be taken down, we have, a building of God, a dwelling not made by hand, age-abiding in the heavens. 2And verily, in this, we sigh, earnestly desiring to clothe ourselves over, with our habitation which is of heaven,— 3Although, indeed, even clothing ourselves, we shall not be found, naked;— 4And verily, we who are in the tent, do sigh, being weighed down, while yet we are not wishing to unclothe ourselves, but to clothe ourselves over,—in order that, what is mortal, may be swallowed up, by life.
Berean Standard Bible
1Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, 3because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. 4So while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens, because we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be swallowed up by life.
1 John 3:2
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
2Beloved! now, are we, children of God; and, not yet, hath it been made manifest, what we shall be,—We know that, if it should be made manifest, like unto him, shall we be, because we shall see him, just as he is.
Berean Standard Bible
2Beloved, we are now children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when Christ appears, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is.

The power that raised Christ
Ephesians 1:19–23
The same power that raised Christ from the dead is toward us who believe. God seated him far above every name that is named and gave him to the church as head over all things. We share in this by spiritual union with him.
A name above every name; spiritual union with Christ
Ephesians 1:19–23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19And what the surpassing greatness of his power unto us who believe,—according to the energy of the grasp of his might 20which he energised in the Christ, when he raised him from among the dead, and seated him at his right hand in the heavenlies, 21Over-above all principality, authority, and power, and lordship, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the coming one, 22And did put, all things, in subjection beneath his feet. And gave him to be head over all things unto the assembly, 23Which, indeed, is his body, the fulness of him who, the all things in all, is for himself filling up.
Berean Standard Bible
19and the surpassing greatness of His power to us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength, 20which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God put everything under His feet and made Him head over everything for the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
In Acts, healing, salvation, and baptism all happen in the name of Jesus Christ. The apostles preached the resurrection, and they rejoiced to be counted worthy to suffer for the name.

Do everything in the name
Acts 3:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6But Peter said—Silver and gold, have none, but, what I have, the same, unto thee do I give:—In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, Walk!
Berean Standard Bible
6But Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!”
Acts 4:10–12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10Be it known unto you all, and unto all the people of Israel: that, in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,—whom, ye, crucified, whom, God, raised from among the dead, in him, doth, this man stand by, in your presence, whole. 11This, is the stone, set at nought by you the builders, which became the head of the corner; 12And there is in no one else, salvation, for, neither is there any other name, under heaven, which hath been set forth among men, in which we must needs be saved.
Berean Standard Bible
10then let this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ 12Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
Acts 5:41
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
41They, therefore, went rejoicing from the presence of the high-council; in that they had been accounted worthy, in behalf of The Name, to suffer dishonour.
Berean Standard Bible
41The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.
Acts 2:38
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
38And Peter [said] unto them—Repent ye, and let each one of you be immersed, in the name of Jesus Christ, into the remission of your sins,—and ye shall receive the free-gift of the Holy Spirit;
Berean Standard Bible
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Colossians 3:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17And whatsoever ye may be doing, in word, or in work, all things, [do] in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks unto the Divine Father through him:—
Berean Standard Bible
17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
6
Burn for what God burns for
The name is not a formula. It is carried by people whose hearts are set on fire by the things God cares about.
7
Highly exalted
Philippians 2:9–112 Corinthians 5:16
God highly exalted Jesus and gave him the name above every name. We no longer know Christ after the flesh, as the carpenter from Nazareth. The name represents the exalted King of Kings.
No longer knowing Christ after the flesh
The name represents the exalted King of Kings
Philippians 2:9–11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
9Wherefore also, God, uplifted him far on high, and favoured him with the name which is above every name,— 10In order that, in the name of Jesus, every knee might bow—of beings in heaven, and on earth, and underground,— 11And, every tongue, might openly confess—that Jesus Christ is, Lord, unto the glory of God the Father.
Berean Standard Bible
9Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above all names, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
2 Corinthians 5:16
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16So that, we, henceforth, know, no one, after the flesh: if we have even been gaining, after the flesh, a knowledge of Christ,
Berean Standard Bible
16So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
8
Walk by faith, not by sight
2 Corinthians 5:7John 5:19John 5:30Romans 4:20–21
Jesus said he could do nothing of himself. He did only what he saw the Father doing. Abraham did not waver at God's promise but was fully persuaded that God could do what he had said. So we can ask big.
Jesus could do nothing of himself
Abraham fully persuaded; ask big
2 Corinthians 5:7
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
7By faith, are we walking, not by sight;—
Berean Standard Bible
7For we walk by faith, not by sight.
John 5:19
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19Jesus, therefore, answered, and went on to say unto them—Verily, verily, I say unto you: The Son cannot be doing, of himself, a single thing,—save anything he may see, the Father, doing; for, whatsoever, he, may be doing, these things, the Son also, in like manner, doeth.
Berean Standard Bible
19So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
John 5:30
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
30I, cannot be doing, of myself, a single thing,—Just as I hear, I judge; and, my judging, is, just,—because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Berean Standard Bible
30I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Romans 4:20–21
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20In respect, however, of the promise of God, he was not led to hesitate by unbelief, but received power by his faith, giving glory unto God, 21And being fully persuaded (that),—what he hath promised, able is he also to perform:
Berean Standard Bible
20Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21being fully persuaded that God was able to do what He had promised.

Section 03 of 09
The sacred secret: Christ in you
Before God sends us out, he calls us to himself. This section begins with a call to undistracted devotion, looks at what the church needs to grow up into Christ, and arrives at the sacred secret hidden through the ages: Christ in you, the hope of glory.
We come to him before we are sent. Waiting on the Lord is not passivity. It is a strategic posture, the place of undistracted devotion where we receive what we will later carry.
Come to him before being sent
The place of undistracted devotion; waiting on the Lord is a strategic posture
1 Corinthians 7:35
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
35This, however, with a view to your own profit, am I saying,—not that, a snare, upon you, I may cast, but with a view to what is comely, and devoted unto the Lord, without distraction.
Berean Standard Bible
35I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but in order to promote proper decorum and undivided devotion to the Lord.
2
The dream: "Jesus, we come to you"
The dream carried a simple cry: "Jesus, we come to you." The anointing on programs is quietly diminishing. What remains is the presence of Christ himself.

3
Gifts given until we come to the unity of the faith
Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers until the whole body reaches the full measure of Christ. The church needs legitimate apostles and prophets. Prophets are judged by prophets, and true prophets are those who stand in God's counsel.
The need for legitimate apostles and prophets; prophets judged by prophets
Prophets who wait in God's counsel
Ephesians 4:11–13
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
11And, he, gave—some, indeed, to be apostles, and some, prophets, and some, evangelists, and some, shepherds and teachers,— 12With a view to the fitting of the saints for the work of ministering, for an upbuilding of the body of the Christ; 13Until we all advance—into the oneness of the faith, and the personal knowledge of the Son of God, into a man of full-growth, into the measure of the stature of the fulness of the Christ;
Berean Standard Bible
11And it was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12to equip the saints for works of ministry and to build up the body of Christ, 13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.
1 Corinthians 14:29
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
29Prophets, moreover, let two or three speak, and let, the others, judge.
Berean Standard Bible
29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.
Jeremiah 23:18
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
18For who hath stood in the council of Yahweh, that he should see and hear his word? Who hath given ear to his word and heard it?
Berean Standard Bible
18But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and hear His word? Who has given heed to His word and obeyed it?
Jeremiah 23:22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
22But if they had stood in my council, Then might they have announced my words unto my people, And have turned them from their wicked way and from the wickedness of their doings.
Berean Standard Bible
22But if they had stood in My council, they would have proclaimed My words to My people and turned them back from their evil ways and deeds.”

The overcoming church
Revelation 3:10Revelation 3:15–17
Philadelphia kept his word and is promised to be kept from the hour of testing. Laodicea thought it was rich and did not see its need. The contrast frames the difference between raptured saints and tribulation saints.
Philadelphia and Laodicea; raptured saints and tribulation saints
Revelation 3:10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10Because thou didst keep my word of endurance, I also, will keep thee out of the hour of trial, which is about to come upon the whole habitable world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Berean Standard Bible
10Because you have kept My command to persevere, I will also keep you from the hour of testing that is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
Revelation 3:15–17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
15I know thy works;—that neither, cold, art thou, nor hot: I would that, cold, thou hadst been, or hot. 16Thus, because, lukewarm, thou art, and neither hot nor cold, I am about to vomit thee out of my mouth. 17Because thou sayest, Rich, am I, and have become enriched, and, of nothing, have I need, and knowest not that, thou, art the wretched one, and pitiable, and destitute, and blind, and naked,
Berean Standard Bible
15I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! 16So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth! 17You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

Presented as a pure virgin to Christ
2 Corinthians 11:2–3Ephesians 4:23
Paul feared that the church's minds would be led away from simple devotion to Christ, as Eve was deceived. The serpent drew Eve into a dialogue about God and about herself. The enemy still swings two clubs, condemnation and pride, and the answer is to be renewed in the spirit of your mind.
Eve deceived through dialogue about God and herself
The enemy's two clubs: condemnation and pride
Renewed in the spirit of your mind
2 Corinthians 11:2–3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
2For I am jealous over you with a jealousy, of God; for I myself betrothed you unto one husband, to present, a chaste virgin, unto the Christ,— 3But I fear lest, by any means, as, the serpent, completely deceived Eve, in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the singleness [and the chasteness] which are [due] unto the Christ.
Berean Standard Bible
2I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. 3I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ.
Ephesians 4:23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
23And were to be getting young again in the spirit of your mind,
On the road to Emmaus, Jesus began with Moses and all the prophets and explained the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.
Luke 24:27
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
27And, beginning from Moses, and from all the prophets, he thoroughly explained to them, in all the Scriptures, the things concerning himself.
Berean Standard Bible
27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself.

Thinking is spiritual
1 Corinthians 2:12Romans 8:15Luke 15:20–22
Our thoughts are shaped by a spirit: the spirit of this age, the spirit of slavery, or the spirit of sonship. The prodigal came home rehearsing the speech of a servant. His father received him as a son.
The spirit of this age, the spirit of slavery, and the spirit of sonship
The prodigal son received as a son
1 Corinthians 2:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12But, as for us,—not the spirit of the world, have we received, but the Spirit which is of God,—that we might know the things which, by God, have been given in favour unto us:—
Berean Standard Bible
12We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
Romans 8:15
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
15For ye have not received a spirit of servitude, leading back into fear, but ye have received a spirit of sonship, whereby we are exclaiming—Abba! Oh Father!
Berean Standard Bible
15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Luke 15:20–22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20Now, while yet he was holding afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and, running, fell upon his neck, and tenderly kissed him. 21And the son said unto him—Father! I have sinned against heaven, and before thee: No longer, am I worthy to be called a son of thine,— [make me as one of thy hired servants.]22But the father said unto his servants—Quick! bring forth a robe—the best! and put on him, and get out a ring for his hand, and sandals for his feet.
Berean Standard Bible
20So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. 21The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

The Spirit of his Son crying "Abba"
Galatians 4:6
Because we are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. Sonship is not something we work up. It cries out from within.
Galatians 4:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6And, because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, exclaiming, Abba! Oh Father!
Berean Standard Bible
6And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

T. Austin-Sparks: the centrality and supremacy of Christ
Isaiah 40:31
Austin-Sparks taught that God's whole purpose centers on his Son. That centrality moves outward through four spheres. Isaiah 40:31, waiting and mounting up with wings, is a picture of Jesus.
Four spheres: the believer, the church, the nations, the universe
Isaiah 40:31 as a picture of Jesus
Isaiah 40:31
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
31But, they who wait for Yahweh, shall renew their strength, They shall mount on strong pinion like eagles,—They shall run and not grow weary, They shall walk and not faint.
Berean Standard Bible
31But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.

The mystery hidden through the ages
Ephesians 1:7–9Ephesians 3:8–11Ephesians 3:16–19
God made known the sacred secret of his will. Through the church, the manifold wisdom of God is now made known to the principalities and authorities, so that in all things Christ might have the preeminence.
That in all things Christ might have the preeminence
The manifold wisdom of God made known through the church
Ephesians 1:7–9
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
7In whom we have the redemption through his blood, the remission of our offences, according to the riches of his favour, 8which he made to superabound towards us; in all wisdom and prudence, 9making known to us the sacred secret of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him,—
Berean Standard Bible
7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And He has made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure, which He purposed in Christ
Ephesians 3:8–11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
8Unto me—the less than least of all saints, was given this favour, unto the nations, to announce the glad-message of the untraceable riches of the Christ, 9And to bring to light—what is the administration of the sacred secret which had been hidden away from the ages in God, who did all things create: 10In order that now, unto the principalities and the authorities in the heavenlies, might be made known, through means of the assembly, the manifold wisdom of God,— 11According to a plan of the ages which he made in the anointed Jesus our Lord,—
Berean Standard Bible
8Though I am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9and to illuminate for everyone the stewardship of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10His purpose was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11according to the eternal purpose that He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 3:16–19
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16In order that he may give unto you—according to his glorious riches, with power, to be strengthened, through his Spirit, in the inner man, 17That the Christ may dwell, through means of your faith, in your hearts, in love, having become rooted and founded, 18In order that ye may be mighty enough to grasp firmly, with all the saints,—what is the breadth and length and depth and height, 19To get to know, also, the knowledge-surpassing, love of the Christ,—in order that ye may be filled unto all the fulness of God:
Berean Standard Bible
16I ask that out of the riches of His glory He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, 17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. Then you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18will have power, together with all the saints, to comprehend the length and width and height and depth 19of the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Christ in you, the hope of glory
Colossians 1:25–2:2
The secret hidden from ages and generations is now revealed: Christ in you, the hope of glory. Paul labors so that believers come into a personal knowledge of the sacred secret of God, which is Christ.
A personal knowledge of the sacred secret of God: Christ
"I want to see my reflection in you"
Colossians 1:25–2:2
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1:25Of which, I, have become minister—according to the administration of God which hath been given unto me to you-ward, to fill up the word of God, 1:26The sacred secret which had been hidden away from the ages and from the generations, but, now, hath been made manifest unto his saints— 1:27Unto whom God hath been pleased to make known what is the glorious wealth of this sacred secret among the nations, which is Christ in you, the hope of the glory,— 1:28Whom we are declaring, admonishing every man, and teaching every man, in all wisdom, in order that we may present every man complete in Christ; 1:29Unto which I am even toiling, contending according to his energy which is energising itself in me with power. 2:1For I desire you to know, how great a contest I am having—in behalf of you, and of those in Laodicea, and as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; 2:2In order that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, even unto all the riches of the full assurance of their understanding, unto a personal knowledge of the sacred secret of God,—Christ:
Berean Standard Bible
1:25I became its servant by the commission God gave me to fully proclaim to you the word of God, 1:26the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now revealed to His saints. 1:27To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 1:28We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. 1:29To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy working powerfully within me. 2:1For I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me face to face, 2:2that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and filled with the full riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ,

Section 04 of 09
From revelation to union
The birth of Christ matters because he had to be made like us to save us. This section follows the path God takes every believer on: a revelation of Christ, Christ living in us, Christ formed in us, and finally union.
The birth of Jesus is where his real humanity begins. Everything that follows, from his temptation to his death to his priesthood, depends on him being a true man.

Made like his brothers
Hebrews 2:14–18
He shared in flesh and blood so that through death he could destroy the one who had the power of death. Because he was made like his brothers in every way, he is a merciful and faithful high priest.
Partook of flesh and blood to destroy the one who had the power of death
A merciful high priest, tempted in every point
Tempted in body, soul, and worship
Hebrews 2:14–18
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14Seeing therefore the children have received a fellowship of blood and flesh, he also, in like manner, took partnership in the same,—in order that, through death,—he might paralyse him that held the dominion of death, that is, the Adversary,— 15And might release these—as many as, by fear of death, were all their lifetime liable, to bondage. 16For, not surely of messengers, is he laying hold, but, of Abraham’s seed, he is laying hold. 17Whence he was obliged, in every way, unto the brethren, to be made like, that he might become a merciful and faithful high-priest, in the things pertaining unto God,—for the making of propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For, in that, he, suffered when tested, he is able, unto them who are being tested, to give succour.
Berean Standard Bible
14Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham. 17For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

The Holy Spirit overshadowed Mary
Luke 1:35
The Holy Spirit came upon Mary and the power of the Most High overshadowed her, so the holy one born would be called the Son of God. Who he truly is comes to us by revelation.
"Spirit the holy"; the Son of God known by revelation
Luke 1:35
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
35And answering, the messenger said unto her—The Holy Spirit, shall come upon thee, and, the power of the Most High, shall overshadow thee; wherefore, even that which is to be born, Holy, shall be called, Son of God.
Berean Standard Bible
35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.
4
Through one man
1 Corinthians 15:21–28Romans 5:12–17
Death came through one man, and resurrection came through one man. In the end all things are subjected to Christ, the Son himself is subject to the Father, and God is all in all.
All things subjected to Christ; the Son subject to the Father; God all in all
1 Corinthians 15:21–28
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
21For, since indeed, through a man, came death, through a man, also cometh the raising of the dead; 22For, just as, in the Adam, all die, so, also, in the Christ, shall all be made alive. 23But, each, in his own rank:—A firstfruit, Christ, after that, they who are the Christ’s, in his presence, 24Afterwards, the end—whensoever he delivereth up the kingdom unto his God and Father, whensoever he shall bring to nought all rule and all authority and power; 25For he must needs reign, until he shall put all his enemies under his feet: 26As a last enemy, death, is to be destroyed; 27For—He put, all things, in subjection under his feet. But, whensoever it shall be said—all things are in subjection!—it is evident that it means,—Except him who did put into subjection, unto him, the all things— 28But whensoever have been put into subjection, unto him, the all things, then, the Son himself, [also] shall be put in subjection unto him who put in subjection, unto him, the all things,—that, God, may be, all things in all.
Berean Standard Bible
21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. 23But each in his own turn: Christ the firstfruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him. 24Then the end will come, when He hands over the kingdom to God the Father after He has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power. 25For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 26The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27For “God has put everything under His feet.” Now when it says that everything has been put under Him, this clearly does not include the One who put everything under Him. 28And when all things have been subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will be made subject to Him who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all.
Romans 5:12–17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12For this cause,—just as, through one man, sin into the world entered, and through sin, death,—and, so, unto all men death passed through, for that all had sinned;— 13For, until law, sin was in the world, although sin is not reckoned when there is no law,— 14Yet still, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over them who had not sinned after the likeness of the transgression of Adam,—who is a type of the Coming One;— 15But, not as the fault, so, [also] the decree of favour, for, if, by the fault of the one, the many died, much more, the favour of God and the free-gift in favour, by the one man Jesus Christ, unto the many superabounded; 16And, not as through one that sinned, is that which is freely given, for, the sentence of judgment, indeed, was—out of one [fault] into condemnation, whereas, the decree of favour, is—out of many faults, into a recovery of righteousness. 17For, if, by the fault of the one, death reigned through the one, much more, they who the superabundance of the favour and of [the free-gift of] the righteousness do receive, in life, shall reign through the one, Jesus Christ.
Berean Standard Bible
12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned. 13For sin was in the world before the law was given; but sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who did not sin in the way that Adam transgressed. He is a pattern of the One to come. 15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many! 16Again, the gift is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment that followed one sin brought condemnation, but the gift that followed many trespasses brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive an abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!

The eternal heart secret of God
The secret God has held in his heart from eternity is Christ in you. From there it reaches outward: the church, the nations, the universe.
Christ in you; then the church, the nations, the universe
6
The progression God takes every believer through
Galatians 4:19John 14:23Ephesians 5:31–32
God does not stop at forgiveness. He moves each believer through stages, each deeper than the last.
A revelation of Christ
Christ living in us
Christ formed in us
The Father and Son making their home in us
Christ and the church as husband and wife
Galatians 4:19
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19My dear children! for whom I, again, am in birth-pains, until Christ be formed within you;—
Berean Standard Bible
19My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,
John 14:23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
23Jesus answered, and said unto him—If any man be loving me, my word, he will keep, and, my Father, will love him,—and, unto him, will we come, and, an abode with him, will we make.
Berean Standard Bible
23Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
Ephesians 5:31–32
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
31For this cause, will a man leave his father and his mother, and will cleave unto his wife, and, they two, shall become, one flesh. 32This sacred secret, is, great,—I, however, am speaking as to Christ and [as to] the assembly;—
Berean Standard Bible
31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” 32This mystery is profound, but I am speaking about Christ and the church.
Paul uses the closest human union to describe our union with the Lord. The one who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.
1 Corinthians 6:16–17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16Or know ye not that, he that joineth himself unto the harlot, is, one body? For, saith he, the two, shall become, one flesh; 17But, he that joineth himself unto the Lord, is, one Spirit.
Berean Standard Bible
16Or don’t you know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.
2
Paul's inward revelation
Galatians 1:15–16Acts 9:8–9
On the road to Damascus Paul saw Christ outwardly. Over three days of blindness God revealed his Son in him. The outward event led to an inward revelation.
An outward revelation on the Damascus road, an inward one over three days
Galatians 1:15–16
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
15But, when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me through his favour, was well-pleased 16to reveal his Son in me, that I might announce the glad-message regarding him among the nations, straightway, I conferred not with flesh and blood,
Berean Standard Bible
15But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb and called me by His grace, was pleased 16to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not rush to consult with flesh and blood,
Acts 9:8–9
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
8And Saul arose from the earth, and, his eyes being opened, he could see nothing; and, taking him by the hand, they led him into Damascus,— 9And he was three days without seeing, and did neither eat nor drink.
Berean Standard Bible
8Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could not see a thing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. 9For three days he was without sight, and he did not eat or drink anything.

A shallow start produces a shallow Christian life
How we begin shapes how we continue. What changes us is intensity of seeking and yielding to him, not working harder.
Intensity; yielding instead of working harder
4
The life I now live by the faith of the Son of God
Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ. The life I now live I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
He loved me and gave himself for me
Galatians 2:20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20With Christ, have I been crucified; and, living no longer, am, I, but, living in me, is, Christ,—while, so far as I now do live in flesh, by faith, I live—The faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up in my behalf.
Berean Standard Bible
20I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
5
God will judge the world by one man
Acts 17:31
God has set a day to judge the world by the man he appointed. Christ is the standard. There is no grading on a curve, and no "pretty good."
Christ is the standard; there is no "pretty good"
Acts 17:31
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
31inasmuch as he hath appointed a day, in which he is about to be judging the habitable earth in righteousness, by a man whom he hath pointed out,—offering faith unto all, by raising him from among the dead?
Berean Standard Bible
31For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”
6
No condemnation: get back up and be Christ
Romans 8:1
A high standard does not mean living under condemnation. There is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, so when we fall we get back up and let Christ live through us.
Romans 8:1
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1Hence there is now, no, condemnation unto them who are in Christ Jesus;
Berean Standard Bible
1Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Section 05 of 09
One God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ
Who is Jesus, and who is God? This section moves from what it means to be begotten of the Spirit and to grow up in Christ, to Paul's confession of one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, and the one mediator between God and men.
Christ revealed to us, Christ living in us, Christ formed in us. Along the way we learn to live by revelation, above the level of conscience.
Living by revelation, above conscience

Begotten of the spirit
John 3:3–6
What is born of flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. To see the kingdom we must be begotten from above.
John 3:3–6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3Jesus answered, and said unto him—Verily, verily, I say unto thee: Except one be born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto him—How, can a man be born, when he is, old? Can he, into the womb of his mother, a second time, enter, and be born? 5Jesus answered—Verily, verily, I say unto thee: Except one be born of water and spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which hath been born of the flesh, is, flesh, and, that which hath been born of the spirit, is, spirit.
Berean Standard Bible
3Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” 4“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?” 5Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh is born of flesh, but spirit is born of the Spirit.

Little children, young men, fathers
1 John 2:12–142 Chronicles 7:14
John speaks to believers at three stages of growth. The way forward at every stage is to seek his face.
Seek my face
1 John 2:12–14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12I write unto you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven you, for the sake of his name: 13I write unto you, fathers, because ye understand him who was from the beginning: I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I have written unto you, little children, because ye understand the Father: 14I have written unto you, fathers, because ye understand him who was from the beginning: I have written you, young men, because ye are, strong, and the word of God, within you, abideth, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
Berean Standard Bible
12I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His name. 13I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. 14I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14if my people upon whom my Name is called shall humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will, I myself, hear out of the heavens, and forgive their sin, and heal their land.
Berean Standard Bible
14and if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

Who is Jesus?
Hebrews 1:3John 14:6
Jesus is the icon of the invisible God and the radiance of God's glory. He is the meaning of life and the only way to the Father.
The icon of the invisible God; the radiance of God's glory
The meaning of life; the only door to the Father
Hebrews 1:3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3Who, being an eradiated brightness of his glory, and an exact representation of his very being, also bearing up all things by the utterance of his power, purification of sins, having achieved, sat down on the right hand of the majesty in high places:
Berean Standard Bible
3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
John 14:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6Jesus saith unto him—I, am the way, and the truth, and the life: No one, cometh unto the Father, but through me.
Berean Standard Bible
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Every blessing comes to us in Christ. Ephesians 1 and 2 keep repeating "in him": chosen, marked out for sonship, raised and seated together, created for good works.
The blessing of Abraham in Christ
Chosen in Christ, marked out for sonship
Seated together in the heavenlies: a realm entered by faith
His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
Galatians 3:13–14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
13Christ, hath redeemed, us, out of the curse of the law, having become, in our behalf, a curse;—because it is written—Cursed, is every one that hangeth upon a tree;— 14In order that, unto the nations, the blessing of Abraham, might come about in Jesus Christ,—in order that, the promise of the Spirit, we might receive through means of the faith.
Berean Standard Bible
13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” 14He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Ephesians 1:3–5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3Blessed, be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing, in the heavenlies, in Christ, 4According as he made choice of us, in him, before the founding of a world, that we might be holy and blameless in his presence; in love, 5marking us out beforehand unto sonship, through Jesus Christ, for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
Berean Standard Bible
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. 4For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His presence. In love 5He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will,
Ephesians 2:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6And raised us up together, and seated us together in the heavenlies, in Christ:
Berean Standard Bible
6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
Ephesians 2:10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10His, in fact we are—his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus upon a footing of good works, which God prepared beforehand, that, therein, we might walk.
Berean Standard Bible
10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.
Paul's confession is clear: for us there is one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. Jesus himself calls the Father "the only true God." His name is Yahweh.
Monos: God alone; his name is Yahweh
1 Corinthians 8:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6[Yet], to us, there is one God the Father, of whom are all things, and, we, for him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and, we, through him.
Berean Standard Bible
6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist.
John 17:3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3And, this, is the age-abiding life, That they get to know thee, the only real God, and him whom thou didst send, Jesus Christ.
Berean Standard Bible
3Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.
Isaiah 42:8
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
8I, am Yahweh, that, is my Name, And, my glory, to another, will I not give, Nor my praise to images.
Berean Standard Bible
8I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory to another or My praise to idols.

The God of our Lord Jesus Christ
John 20:17Ephesians 1:3Revelation 3:12
After his resurrection Jesus called the Father "my God and your God." Paul blesses "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." In Revelation, Jesus promises to write on the overcomer the name of his God and his own new name.
A new name comes with new revelation
John 20:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17Jesus saith unto her—Be not detaining me, for, not yet, have I ascended unto the Father; but be going unto my disciples, and say unto them—I am ascending unto my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.
Berean Standard Bible
17“Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”
Ephesians 1:3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3Blessed, be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with every spiritual blessing, in the heavenlies, in Christ,
Berean Standard Bible
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms.
Revelation 3:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12He that overcometh, I will make, him, a pillar in the sanctuary of my God, and, outside, shall he in nowise go forth any more; and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and [I will write upon him] my new name.
Berean Standard Bible
12The one who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will never again leave it. Upon him I will write the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God (the new Jerusalem that comes down out of heaven from My God), and My new name.

No longer knowing Jesus after the flesh
1 Corinthians 15:45
The first man Adam became a living soul. The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. We now know Jesus as the risen one.
The last Adam became a life-giving spirit
1 Corinthians 15:45
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
45Thus, also, it is written—The first man, Adam, became, a living soul, the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
Berean Standard Bible
45So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being;” the last Adam a life-giving spirit.
4
One mediator between God and men
1 Timothy 2:5
There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
5For there is, one, God, one, mediator also, between God and men,—a man—Christ Jesus:
Berean Standard Bible
5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
5
Our brother, the Son of God
Matthew 16:16–17John 10:34–36
Peter's confession, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," came by revelation from the Father. Jesus spoke of himself as the one the Father set apart and sent into the world.
Matthew 16:16–17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16And, Simon Peter, answering, said—Thou, art the Christ, the Son of the Living God. 17And Jesus, answering, said to him—Happy, art thou, Simon Bar-yona,—because, flesh and blood, revealed it not unto thee, but my Father who is in the heavens.
Berean Standard Bible
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by My Father in heaven.
John 10:34–36
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
34Jesus answered them—Is it not written in your law: I, said, Ye are, gods? 35If, those, he called gods, unto whom, the word of God, came—and the Scripture cannot be broken— 36Of him whom, the Father, hallowed and sent forth into the world, are, ye, saying—Thou speakest profanely, because I said, Son of God, I am?
Berean Standard Bible
34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’? 35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken— 36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?
6
All things for and through him
Colossians 1:16Hebrews 2:10
All things were created in him, through him, and for him. God, for whom and through whom are all things, brings many sons to glory through him.
Colossians 1:16
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16Because, in him, were created all things in the heavens and upon the earth, the things seen and the things unseen, whether thrones or lordships or principalities or authorities,—they all, through him and for him, have been created,
Berean Standard Bible
16For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him.
Hebrews 2:10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10For it was becoming in him—For the sake of whom are the all things, and by means of whom are the all things,—when, many sons, unto glory, he would lead, The Princely Leader of their salvation, through sufferings, to make perfect.
Berean Standard Bible
10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.
7
Begotten of God
1 John 5:1–51 John 5:9–13
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God, and whatever is begotten of God overcomes the world. God has given his witness about his Son: eternal life is in the Son. These things are written to those who believe in the name of the Son of God.
Whatever is begotten of God overcomes the world
God's witness concerning his Son
Eternal life is in the Son; believe in the name
1 John 5:1–5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1Whosoever believeth that, Jesus, is the Christ, of God, hath been born: and, whosoever loveth him that begat, loveth him that hath been begotten of him. 2Hereby, perceive we, that we love the children of God, as soon as, God, we love, and, his commandments, we are doing. 3For, this is the love of God—that, his commandments, we be keeping, and, his commandments, are not burdensome; 4Because, whatsoever hath been born of God, overcometh the world; and, this, is the victory that hath overcome the world—our faith. 5[And] who is he that overcometh the world, save he that believeth that, Jesus, is the Son of God?
Berean Standard Bible
1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome, 4because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. 5Who then overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
1 John 5:9–13
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
9If, the witness of men, we receive, the witness of God, is, greater. Because, this, is the witness of God—in that he hath borne witness concerning his Son,— 10He that believeth on the Son of God, hath the witness, within himself: He that doth not believe God, false, hath made him,—because he hath not believed on the witness which, God, hath witnessed, concerning his Son— 11And, this, is the witness:—that, life age-abiding, hath God given unto us, and, this life, is, in his Son: 12He that hath the Son, hath, the life,—he that hath not the Son of God, hath not, the life. 13These things, have I written unto you—in order that ye may know that ye have, Life Age-abiding—unto you who believe on the name of the Son of God.
Berean Standard Bible
9Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son. 10Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son. 11And this is that testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Section 06 of 09
The man Christ Jesus
This section asks who died on the cross. It traces how Greek and Roman ideas shaped later doctrine, and compares that with what Scripture says about the man Christ Jesus: begotten, sent, obedient, raised, and appointed as the one mediator and judge.
Scripture calls God immortal and invisible. The one who died on the cross was the man Christ Jesus.
God is immortal and impassible
1 Timothy 1:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17Now, unto the King of the ages,—incorruptible, invisible, alone God, be honour and glory, unto the ages of ages, Amen!
Berean Standard Bible
17Now to the King eternal, immortal, and invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
2
Incarnation in Greek and Roman belief
Acts 14:11Acts 28:6Acts 12:22
In the book of Acts, pagan crowds quickly decide a man is a god come down: at Lystra, at Malta, and with Herod. The idea of gods in human form was common in the Greek and Roman world.
Acts 14:11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
11And, the multitudes, seeing what Paul had done, lifted up their voice, in the speech of Lycaonia—The gods, made like unto men, have come down unto us!
Berean Standard Bible
11When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices in the Lycaonian language: “The gods have come down to us in human form!”
Acts 28:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6whereas, they, were expecting, that he was about to become inflamed, or to fall down suddenly dead;—but, when they had been long expecting, and had observed, nothing unusual, happening unto him, they changed their minds, and began to say he was a god.
Berean Standard Bible
6The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
Acts 12:22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
22And, the populace, began to shout—A god’s, voice, and not, a man’s!
Berean Standard Bible
22And they began to shout, “This is the voice of a god, not a man!”
3
Greek philosophy merged into church doctrine
Over the following centuries, Greek philosophy blended into church teaching and shaped doctrines that Scripture does not state.
Mary as mother of God; original sin; infant baptism
4
The doctrine of eternal generation set against "this day"
The doctrine of eternal generation holds that the Son is begotten from eternity. Scripture says "this day I have begotten you," and points to a specific day.
Before Yahweh no god was formed, and there is no savior besides him. Jesus was begotten in Mary by the Holy Spirit, confessed by Peter as the Son of the living God, and set apart and sent by the Father.
Peter's confession
Isaiah 43:10–11
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10Ye, are my witnesses Declareth Yahweh, And my Servant, whom I have chosen,—That ye may take note—and believe me, And perceive that, I, am He, Before me, was not formed a GOD, Nor after me, shall one come into being: 11I—I, am Yahweh,—And there is none besides me ready to save:
Berean Standard Bible
10“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come. 11I, yes I, am the LORD, and there is no Savior but Me.
36Of him whom, the Father, hallowed and sent forth into the world, are, ye, saying—Thou speakest profanely, because I said, Son of God, I am?
Berean Standard Bible
36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?
Because Jesus was begotten by God in Mary, the last Adam was born without a fallen nature. That is what made him able to stand where the first Adam fell.
A real man offered a real sacrifice. Hebrews 4 through 10 presents him as a high priest after the order of Melchizedek, holy, harmless, and separate from sinners, who offered himself once for all.
A high priest after the order of Melchizedek
Hebrews 4:14–15
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14Having then a great high-priest who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession; 15For we have not a high-priest unable to have fellow-feeling with our weaknesses, but one tested in all respects, by way of likeness, apart from sin.
Berean Standard Bible
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin.
Hebrews 7:26–27
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
26For, such a high-priest as this, for us, was [even] suited: Loving, noble, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and become, higher than the heavens; 27Who hath no daily necessity, like the high-priests, beforehand, over his own sins, to be offering sacrifices, after that, over those, of the people,—for, this, he did once for all when, himself, he offered up.
Berean Standard Bible
26Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy, innocent, undefiled, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, He does not need to offer daily sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people; He sacrificed for sin once for all when He offered up Himself.
By one man's disobedience many were made sinners. By one man's obedience many will be made righteous. Jesus is Lord, and his God and Father is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus warned against traditions that make the word of God void.
Jesus is Lord; the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
Traditions that nullify the word of God
Romans 5:19
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19For, just as, through the disobedience of the one man, sinners, the many were constituted, so, also, through the obedience of the one, righteous, the many shall be constituted—
Berean Standard Bible
19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
Mark 7:13
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
13cancelling the word of God by your tradition which ye have delivered. And, many such similar things, are ye doing!
Berean Standard Bible
13Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.”
By a man came death, and by a man came the resurrection of the dead. Hebrews says he was made like us in every way, which stands against the later creeds.
The second man is of heaven by origin. He was not Joseph's son. John the Baptist and the manna show how Scripture uses "from heaven" and "from God" to speak of where something comes from.
Not Joseph's son; John the Baptist and the manna as examples
Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world and revealed in these last times. The Logos was the plan and purpose of God from the beginning. God calls things that are not as though they were.
Logos: the plan and purpose of God
God calls things that are not as though they were
1 Peter 1:20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
20Foreknown, indeed, before the foundation of the world, but made manifest at a last stage of the times, for the sake of you
Berean Standard Bible
20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.
John 1:1
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1Originally, was, the Word, and, the Word, was, with God; and, the Word, was, God.
Berean Standard Bible
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Romans 4:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17Even as it is written—Father of many nations, have I appointed thee: before him whom he believed—God, who causeth the dead to live, and calleth the things that are not as things that are:—
Berean Standard Bible
17As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist.

The sacred secret revealed
Colossians 1:25–2:2
The secret hidden for ages is now made known to his saints. The Reformation recovered much, but it is not finished.
Paul received the sacred secret by revelation and was given its administration. For this reason he bows his knees before the Father, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul bows before the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
Ephesians 3:3–7
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3[How that], by way of revelation, was made known unto me the sacred secret,—even as I before wrote in brief,— 4Respecting which ye can, by reading, perceive my discernment in the sacred secret of the Christ,— 5Which, in other generations, had not been made known unto the sons of men, as it hath, now, been revealed by his holy apostles and prophets, in Spirit;— 6That they who are of the nations should be joint heirs, and a joint body, and joint partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through means of the glad-message,— 7Of which I was made a minister, according to the free-gift of the favour of God which was given unto me, according to the energy of his power:
Berean Standard Bible
3that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. 4In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. 6This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus. 7I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace, given me through the working of His power.
14For this cause, I bow my knees unto the Father,—
Berean Standard Bible
14... for this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

Section 07 of 09
Led into the wilderness
Luke 4 follows Jesus from the Jordan, where the Father spoke over him, into the wilderness, where he was tested, and back to Galilee in the power of the Spirit. This section looks at why God sets apart those he uses, how Jesus answered temptation, and what the anointing is for.
Full of the Holy Spirit and validated by the Father
Luke 3:21–22Luke 4:1–2
At the Jordan the Father said, "You are my beloved Son." Immediately Jesus was led into the wilderness. A voice from hell follows the voice from heaven.
A voice from hell follows the voice from heaven
Luke 3:21–22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
21Now it came to pass, when one and all the people were immersed, Jesus also, having been immersed, and being at prayer, heaven was opened; 22and the Holy Spirit descended, in bodily appearance, as a dove, upon him,—and, a voice out of heaven, came—Thou, art my Son, the Beloved, in thee, I delight.
Berean Standard Bible
21When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as He was praying, heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”
Luke 4:1–2
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1And, Jesus, full of Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led in the Spirit in the desert, 2forty days,—being tempted by the adversary; and he did eat nothing in those days,—and, when they were concluded, he hungered.
Berean Standard Bible
1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2where for forty days He was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He was hungry.
2
Purpose of the wilderness
Everyone God uses significantly is set apart in a wilderness first. David Wilkerson spoke of this pattern.
Everyone significantly used by God is set apart there; David Wilkerson
3
Biblical examples of testing
Luke 1:801 Samuel 23:14
John the Baptist lived in the deserts until the day he was shown to Israel. David spent years in wilderness strongholds while Saul hunted him.
Luke 1:80
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
80And, the child, went on growing, and being strengthened in spirit, and was in the deserts, until the day he was pointed out unto Israel.
Berean Standard Bible
80And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel.
1 Samuel 23:14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14Then David abode in the wilderness, in the fortresses, and he abode in the hill country, in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him continually, but God delivered him not into his hand.
Berean Standard Bible
14And David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hill country of the Wilderness of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God would not deliver David into his hand.
4
Isolation and endurance
1 Kings 19:3–4Galatians 1:17
Elijah ran into the wilderness and asked to die. Paul went away into Arabia before he ever conferred with the apostles.
1 Kings 19:3–4
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3And, when he saw [that], he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah,—and left his servant there. 4But, he himself, went into the wilderness a day’s journey, and came and sat down under a certain shrub,—and asked for his life, that he might die, and said—Enough, now, O Yahweh! take away my life, for, no better, am, I, than, my fathers.
Berean Standard Bible
3And Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
Galatians 1:17
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
17Neither went I up unto Jerusalem unto them who, before me, were apostles,—but I went away into Arabia, and again returned unto Damascus.
Berean Standard Bible
17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to the apostles who came before me, but I went into Arabia and later returned to Damascus.
5
Temptations in the desert
Luke 4:3–4
Jesus did not debate the devil. He answered with the word: we live not by bread alone but by every word from the mouth of God.
Don't dialogue with the enemy
Not by bread alone, but by every word from the mouth of God
Luke 4:3–4
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
3And the adversary said to him—If thou art God’s, Son, speak unto this stone; that it become bread. 4And Jesus made answer unto him—It is written: Not, on bread alone, shall, man, live.
Berean Standard Bible
3The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”
6
Worship and idols
Luke 4:5–8
Satan offered the kingdoms of the world in exchange for worship, which shows how much he values it. We are still tempted by gods we make for ourselves.
Satan values worship; manufactured gods: fear, theology, preferences
Luke 4:5–8
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
5And, leading him up, he shewed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth, in a moment of time. 6And the adversary said to him—Unto thee, will I give this authority, all together, and their glory; because, unto me, hath it been delivered up, and, to whomsoever I please, I give it: 7Thou, therefore, if thou wilt worship before me, it shall all, be thine. 8And, answering, Jesus said to him—It is written: The Lord thy God, shalt thou worship, and, unto him alone, render divine service.
Berean Standard Bible
5Then the devil led Him up to a high place and showed Him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish. 7So if You worship me, it will all be Yours.” 8But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’”
7
Shortcuts and protection
Luke 4:9–12
Throwing himself from the pinnacle of the temple would have been presumption. God's protection is found inside his will, not in testing him.
Presumption at the pinnacle of the temple; protection in God's will
Luke 4:9–12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
9And he led him into Jerusalem, and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple,—and said [to him] —If thou art God’s, Son, cast thyself, from hence, down; 10for it is written—Unto his messengers, will he give command concerning thee, to keep vigilant watch over thee,— 11And, On hands, will they take thee up, lest once thou strike, against a stone, thy foot. 12And Jesus, answering, said to him—It is said: Thou shalt not put to the test the Lord thy God.
Berean Standard Bible
9Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. 10For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; 11and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’” 12But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8
Returning with power
Luke 4:13–15
Jesus went into the wilderness full of the Spirit and came out in the power of the Spirit.
Luke 4:13–15
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
13And, having concluded every temptation, the adversary departed from him until a fitting season. 14And Jesus returned, in the power of the Spirit, into Galilee; and, a report, went out along the whole of the region, concerning him; 15and, he, began teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Berean Standard Bible
13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. 14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. 15He taught in their synagogues and was glorified by everyone.
9
Anointing for ministry
Luke 4:16–18Acts 10:38Acts 2:22John 14:10
God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. The works he did were the Father working through a man approved by God.
Luke 4:16–18
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16And he came into Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and entered, according to his custom, on the sabbath day, into the synagogue,—and stood up to read. 17And there was handed to him a scroll of the prophet Isaiah; and unfolding the scroll, he found the place where it was written: 18The Spirit of the Lord, is upon me, because he hath anointed me—to tell glad tidings unto the destitute; He hath sent me forth,—To proclaim, to captives, a release, and, to the blind, a recovering of sight,—to send away the crushed, with a release;
Berean Standard Bible
16Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. As was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath. And when He stood up to read, 17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling it, He found the place where it was written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,
Acts 10:38
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
38How God anointed him with Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the adversary, because, God, was with him.
Berean Standard Bible
38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him.
Acts 2:22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
22Ye men of Israel! hear these words:—Jesus the Nazarene, a man pointed out of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs, which God did through him in your midst, just as ye yourselves know,
Berean Standard Bible
22Men of Israel, listen to this message: Jesus of Nazareth was a man certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know.
John 14:10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10Believest thou not, that, I, am in the Father, and, the Father, is, in me? The things which I am saying unto you, from myself, I speak not; but, the Father, within me abiding, doeth his works.
Berean Standard Bible
10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.
10
Greater works through us
John 14:12John 14:28
Because Jesus went to the Father, those who believe will do the works he did, and greater works.
John 14:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12Verily, verily, I say unto you—He that believeth on me, the works which, I, am doing, he also, shall do; and, greater than these, shall he do, because, I, unto the Father, am going,—
Berean Standard Bible
12Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I am doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
John 14:28
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
28Ye heard that, I, said unto you—I go my way, and I come unto you,—Had ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced, that I am going unto the Father, for, the Father, is, greater than I.
Berean Standard Bible
28You heard Me say, ‘I am going away, and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.
11
Overcoming unbelief
2 Corinthians 5:16
This is called the year of killing unbelief. Part of that is no longer knowing Christ after the flesh.
The year of killing unbelief; no longer knowing Christ after the flesh
Jesus came out of the wilderness and stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth to proclaim the welcome year of the Lord. This section looks at trials, daily devotion, church community, the anointing, and the thoughts we have to take captive, and ends with a call to prayer.
Mark's language is strong: the Spirit drove him out. The wilderness was God's plan, not an accident.
Mark 1:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12And, straightway, the Spirit urgeth him forth into the wilderness;
Berean Standard Bible
12At once the Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness,
2
Understanding fiery trials
1 Peter 4:12
Do not be surprised by the fiery trial as though something strange were happening.
1 Peter 4:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12Beloved! be not held in surprise by the burning among you, which, for putting you to the proof, is befalling you, as though a, surprising, thing were happening unto you;
Berean Standard Bible
12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you.
3
The power of God's word
Mark 1:10
At his baptism the Spirit came down into him. The word and the Spirit work together.
The Spirit came into him
Mark 1:10
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
10And, straightway, as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens rending asunder, and, the Spirit, as a dove, descending unto him;
Berean Standard Bible
10As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens breaking open and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove.
4
The challenge of daily devotion
Daily devotion is hard to keep up. One practical help is to let Scripture play in the home.
Letting scripture play in the home
5
The importance of church community
Luke 4:16–18
It was Jesus' custom to be in the synagogue on the Sabbath, even in his hometown where familiarity bred contempt. Church was God's idea.
44While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were hearing the word. 45And the faithful, of the circumcision, who had come with Peter, were amazed,—in that, upon the nations also, the free-gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out; 46For they heard them speaking with tongues, and magnifying God. Then answered Peter—
Berean Standard Bible
44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard his message. 45All the circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46For they heard them speaking in tongues and exalting God. Then Peter said,

Living in the holy of holies
1 Corinthians 3:16Hebrews 10:19–20
We are the naos, the inner sanctuary of God. Because the veil was torn, we live inside it.
We are the naos; living inside the torn veil
1 Corinthians 3:16
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
16Know ye not that ye are a shrine of God, and that the Spirit of God within you doth dwell?
Berean Standard Bible
16Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
Hebrews 10:19–20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19Having therefore, brethren, freedom of speech for the entrance through the Holy place, by the blood of Jesus, 20Which entrance he hath consecrated for us, as a way recent and living, through the veil, that is, his flesh,—
Berean Standard Bible
19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body,

Proclaiming the year of the Lord
Luke 4:19–20
Jesus read up to "the acceptable year of the Lord" and stopped. He closed the book, and every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him.
Luke 4:19–20
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
19To proclaim the welcome year of the Lord. 20And, folding up the scroll, he handed it to the attendant, and sat down; and, the eyes of all, in the synagogue, were intently fixed upon him;

Taking thoughts captive
2 Corinthians 10:4–5
Strongholds are made of thoughts. Our weapons tear down reasonings and every high thing raised against the knowledge of God.
Strongholds are thoughts; destroying speculations
2 Corinthians 10:4–5
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
4For, the weapons of our warfare, are not fleshly, but mighty, by God, unto a pulling down of strongholds,— 5When we pull down, calculations, and every height that uplifteth itself against the knowledge of God, and when we bring into captivity every thought unto the obedience of the Christ,
Berean Standard Bible
4The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
10
Responding to a fallen nation
2 Chronicles 7:14
Our response to a nation in decline begins with God's people humbling themselves, praying, and seeking his face.
The people of Nazareth asked, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" They could not see past the flesh. The power is in the name of Jesus.
"Isn't this Joseph's son?"; power in the name of Jesus
Luke 4:22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
22And, all, were bearing witness to him, and marvelling at the words of favour which were proceeding out of his mouth; and they were saying—Is not, this, the, son of Joseph?
Berean Standard Bible
22All spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that came from His lips. “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” they asked.
12
The urgency of evangelism
Colossians 1:28Ephesians 2:12
Without Christ, people are without hope and without God in the world. We proclaim him, and how we say it matters as much as what we say.
It's not what you say, it's how you say it
Colossians 1:28
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
28Whom we are declaring, admonishing every man, and teaching every man, in all wisdom, in order that we may present every man complete in Christ;
Berean Standard Bible
28We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
Ephesians 2:12
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
12That ye were, in that season, separate from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and godless in the world;
Berean Standard Bible
12remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
13
Truth and rejection
Luke 4:24–29
Nazareth went from wonder to rage in a few minutes. Jesus is either the Son of God or he is not a good man. There is no middle ground.
Either the Son of God or not a good man
Luke 4:24–29
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
24And he said—Verily, I say unto you, No prophet, is, welcome, in his own country, 25And, of a truth, I say unto you—Many widows, were in the days of Elijah, in Israel, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine upon all the land; 26And, unto none of them, was Elijah sent, save unto Sarepta of Sidonia, unto a woman that was a widow. 27And, many lepers, were in Israel, in the time of Elisha the prophet, and, not one of them, was cleansed, save Naaman the Syrian. 28And all were filled with wrath, in the synagogue, as they heard these things. 29And, rising up, they thrust him forth outside the city, and led him as far as a brow of the hill on which their city was built,—so that they might throw him down headlong.
Berean Standard Bible
24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon. 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” 28On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged. 29They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff.
14
A call to prayer and adventure
Matthew 4:13Luke 4:32Matthew 6:6Acts 1:14
Jesus left Nazareth, and his word carried authority. The church began in a room of people praying with one accord. The call is to shut the door and pray.
Forsaking Nazareth; authority
Shut the door and pray; how the church began
Matthew 4:13
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
13and, forsaking Nazareth, he came and fixed his dwelling in Capernaum, which was by the lake,—within the bounds of Zebulun and Naphtali:
Berean Standard Bible
13Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
Luke 4:32
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
32and they were being struck with astonishment at his teaching, because, with authority, was his word.
Berean Standard Bible
32They were astonished at His teaching, because His message had authority.
Matthew 6:6
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
6But, thou, when thou wouldest pray, enter into thy closet, and, fastening thy door, pray unto thy Father who is in secret,—and, thy Father who seeth in secret, will reward thee.
Berean Standard Bible
6But when you pray, go into your inner room, shut your door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Acts 1:14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14These all were giving constant attention with one accord unto the prayer, with [certain] women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
Berean Standard Bible
14With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

Section 09 of 09
Christ formed in us
The church exists to reveal Christ. This final section brings the series together: setting aside human priorities, surrendering our own will, and letting Christ be formed in us until he is at home in us.
Peter meant well, but he had his mind on human things rather than the things of God.
Matthew 16:23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
23But, he, turning, said to Peter—Withdraw behind me, Satan! A snare, art thou of mine, because thou art not regarding the things of God, but the things of men.
Berean Standard Bible
23But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
3
The secret of God: Christ hidden, now manifest through the church
Colossians 1:25–2:2
What was hidden for generations is now made visible through the church.
Jesus gave his people the glory the Father gave him, so that they may be one.
John 17:21–22
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
21That they, all, may be, one,—even as, thou, Father, in me, and, I, in thee,—that, they also, in us, may be;—that, the world, may believe that, thou, didst send me forth. 22And, I, the glory which thou hast given to me, have given to them, that they may be one, even as, we, are, one.—
Berean Standard Bible
21that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one—
7
The love of the Son
2 Corinthians 3:18Galatians 2:20
As we behold his glory we are transformed into the same image. It all flows from the Son who loved us and gave himself for us.
2 Corinthians 3:18
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
18And, we all, with unveiled face, receiving and reflecting, the glory of [the] Lord, into the same image, are being transformed, from glory into glory,—even as from a Spirit that is Lord.
Berean Standard Bible
18And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Body, soul, and spirit correspond to the outer court, inner court, and holy of holies. We are conformed to his image, and Christ is formed in us.
Body, soul, spirit as outer court, inner court, holy of holies
Conformed and formed
1 Thessalonians 5:23
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
23But, the God of peace himself, hallow you completely, and, entire, might your spirit, and soul, and body,—[so as to be] unblameable in the Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ,—be preserved!
Berean Standard Bible
23Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul asked the Galatians who had bewitched them. Legalism leaves a believer with Christ but without his features showing.
Christ without features in the believer
Galatians 3:1–3
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
1O thoughtless Galatians! who hath bewitched you,—before whose very eyes, Jesus Christ, was openly set forth as a crucified one? 2This only, am I wishing to learn from you:—by works of law, received ye, the Spirit? or by a believed report? 3So thoughtless, are ye? Having made a beginning in Spirit, are ye, now, in flesh, to be made complete?
Berean Standard Bible
1O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith? 3Are you so foolish? After starting in the Spirit, are you now finishing in the flesh?

Walking in anointing
1 John 2:27
The anointing we received abides in us and teaches us. It gives discernment without fear and breaks the battles in our minds.
Discernment without fear; breaking mind battles
1 John 2:27
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
27And, as for you, the anointing which ye have received from him, abideth in you, and ye have, no need, that anyone be teaching you; but, as, his anointing, is teaching you, and is, true, and is no falsehood, even just as it hath taught you, abide ye in him.
Berean Standard Bible
27And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.

The victory of faith
Romans 6:14
Sin will not rule us, because we are not under law but under grace. Victory comes by clinging to Christ by faith.
Not under the law; clinging to Christ by faith
Romans 6:14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14For, sin, over you, shall not have lordship, for ye are not under law, but under favour.
Berean Standard Bible
14For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

Moving past self-reliance
Galatians 6:14
We come to God with our hands full of Jesus, not our own efforts. The cross stays at the center.
Coming with hands full of Jesus; the cross at the center
Galatians 6:14
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
14With me, however, far be it! to be boasting, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,—whereby, unto me, a world hath been crucified, and, I, unto a world;
Berean Standard Bible
14But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Preparing a home for Christ
Luke 10:38–42John 14:23
A house is not the same as a home. At Bethany, Mary sat at his feet and listened. Jesus wants a place where he is at home.
A house is not a home; Bethany; listening like Mary
Luke 10:38–42
Rotherham Emphasised Bible
38And, as they were journeying, he, entered into a certain village; and, a certain woman, named Martha, welcomed him into her house. 39And, she, had a sister, called Mary, who also, seating herself at the feet of the Lord, was hearing his word. 40But, Martha, was distracted about much ministering, and, coming near, said—Lord! carest thou not that, my sister, hath left me to be ministering, alone? Speak to her, then, that she help me. 41But the Lord, answering, said to her—Martha! Martha! thou art anxious and troubled about many things: 42Of few things, is there need, or, of one; Mary, in fact, hath chosen, the good part,—one which shall not be taken away from her.
Berean Standard Bible
38As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!” 41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. 42But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.”
