Living by Faith or bySight

There is a universe of difference between walking by faith and walking by sight. This teaching works through what our default really is, who we are as begotten sons and daughters, how to fight, and why faith must be tested. Every verse quoted or read aloud is set out in full below.

RotherhamThe Emphasized Bible, J. B. Rotherham (1902). A very literal rendering, and the one often read from in this series.

Living by Sight or by Faith

There is a universe of difference between walking by faith and walking by sight. The question is which one runs when life switches on.

1.1The Default Program

When a computer powers up, billions of computations fire in the first second and certain default programs load on their own. You have to do something on purpose to change a default. Our lives work the same way.

“Sight” here is more than what the eyes see. It is a whole state of mind: living by our natural view of everything. If the Almighty walked through every decision, every hurt and every reaction we had this week, most of us would discover how much we lean on a natural, doubting, wrestling mind.

There’s a universe of difference between walking by faith and walking by sight.

Hebrews 12:29Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

29For, even our God, is a consuming fire.

Berean · Standard Bible

29“For our God is a consuming fire.”

1.2A Measure of Faith

When we were born again, God dealt each one of us a measure of faith. The Greek word means a determined extent, a portion that is measured. Without that gift we would not even know what it feels like to believe God for something. Natural faith trusts the TV remote and the Uber driver. Living faith interacts with God, and only God can give it.

Paul also speaks of a measure of influence, a sphere God assigns. Not everyone is called to a private jet and stadium crusades, but every one of us has a scope of impact. And the mustard seed is not permission to stay small. It is one of the tiniest seeds, yet it grows into a tree. Our initial faith is meant to keep growing.

Romans 12:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3For I say, through the favour which hath been given me, unto every one who is among you,—not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but so to think as to think soberly—as, unto each one, God hath dealt a measure of faith.

Berean · Standard Bible

3For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think of yourself with sober judgment, according to the measure of faith God has given you.

2 Corinthians 10:13-14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

13We, however, not as to the things without measure, will boast ourselves, but, according to the measure of the limit which God apportioned unto us, as a measure—to reach as far as even you! 14For, not as though we were not reaching unto you, are we over-stretching ourselves, for, as far as even you, were we beforehand in the glad-message of the Christ:

Berean · Standard Bible

13We, however, will not boast beyond our limits, but only within the field of influence that God has assigned to us—a field that reaches even to you. 14We are not overstepping our bounds, as if we had not come to you. Indeed, we were the first to reach you with the gospel of Christ.

Matthew 17:20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

20And, he, saith unto them—Because of your little faith. For, verily, I say unto you—If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say to this mountain, remove hence yonder; and it shall be removed, and, nothing, shall be impossible to you.

Berean · Standard Bible

20“Because you have so little faith,” He answered. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 13:31-32

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

31Another parable, put he before them, saying—The kingdom of the heavens is like unto, a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32which, indeed, is, less, than all seeds, but, when grown, is greater than garden-plants, and becometh a tree,—so that the birds of heaven come, and lodge among its branches.

Berean · Standard Bible

31He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man planted in his field. 32Although it is the smallest of all seeds, yet it grows into the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.”

1.3Faith Comes by Hearing

The literal wording is that hearing comes “through a word of Christ.” That word can arrive through Scripture, a sermon, a song, a prayer meeting, a prophetic word, a friend’s passing comment, even a clumsy Christmas play. When it lands, faith quickens, and we go “from faith to faith.”

Romans 10:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17Hence, our faith, cometh by something heard, and, that which is heard, through a declaration of Christ.

Berean · Standard Bible

17Consequently, faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Romans 1:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17For, a righteousness of God, is therein revealed,—by faith unto faith: even as it is written—But, he that is righteous, by faith, shall live.

Berean · Standard Bible

17For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God that comes by faith from start to finish, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

1.4The Mindset of the Flesh

The lower nature is not only the obvious sins. It is the mindset that is natural, earthly and consumed with earthly things, and that mindset is death. Many of us have areas that are dead because we have been running on it. The mindset of the Spirit, which is inseparable from faith, is life and peace, without that low hum of anxiety.

There is a great chasm between the two. When a hard situation comes up, do we default to “God, of course, yes,” or to “Oh my God, I never thought of this”? Pause. Consider. What is your default?

Romans 8:6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6For, what is preferred by the flesh, [is] death, whereas, what is preferred by the spirit, [is] life and peace;—

Berean · Standard Bible

6The mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace,

Colossians 3:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2The things on high, hold in esteem, not the things upon the earth:

Berean · Standard Bible

2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

1.5The Heart Behind the Brain

Our original thoughts do not start in the brain. They come from deep inside, from what the Bible calls the heart, where spirit, soul and consciousness mingle. We choose what to send up to the machine called a brain, and what has filled the heart is what comes out of the mouth when we are confronted.

If we have been joined to the vine, praying and growing, there will be a different response. A person who cannot rule their own spirit is a city with no walls, open to whatever comes.

Luke 6:45

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

45The good man, out of the good treasure of the heart, bringeth forth that which is good; and, the wicked man, out of the wicked heart, bringeth forth that which is wicked; for, out of an overflowing of heart, speaketh, his mouth.

Berean · Standard Bible

45The good man brings good things out of the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

John 15:5-6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5I, am the vine: Ye, are the branches. He that abideth in me and, I, in him, the same, beareth much fruit; because, apart from me, ye can bring forth, nothing. 6If one abide not me, he is cast out as the branch, and withered, and they gather them,—and, into fire, they cast them, and they are burned.

Berean · Standard Bible

5I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned.

Proverbs 25:28

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

28A city broken down without a wall, is a man who hath no control over his own spirit.

Berean · Standard Bible

28Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who does not control his temper.

1.6We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight

God prepared us for this very purpose and gave us the pledge of His Spirit, so we can be confident even while we are absent from the Lord in this body. We walk by faith, not by natural thinking and natural perception.

So what happened? We were born again by a miracle and given faith, yet for many of us faith has slipped to number six in our default progression. We grew weary in doing well. We stopped choosing, focusing and putting our energy into faith. Our goal is the mind of Christ, so it is worth examining ourselves.

Mind static, jumbled thoughts and “mental tennis” (yes, no, maybe, probably not) wear us out. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil left us living by conscience, but God’s intent was to walk with us and give us revelation.

2 Corinthians 5:5-7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5Now, he that hath wrought us for this very thing, is, God,—who hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit, 6Having good courage, therefore, at all times, and knowing that—remaining at home in the body, we are away from home from the Lord,— 7By faith, are we walking, not by sight;—

Berean · Standard Bible

5And God has prepared us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a pledge of what is to come. 6Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord. 7For we walk by faith, not by sight.

2 Corinthians 13:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5Be trying, yourselves, whether ye are in the faith, be putting, yourselves, to the test! Or do ye not recognise yourselves, seeing that, Jesus Christ, is in you,—unless perhaps ye fail in the testing.

Berean · Standard Bible

5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?

Galatians 6:9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9And, in doing that which is honourable, let us not be fainthearted; for, in due season, we shall reap, if we faint not.

Berean · Standard Bible

9Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

1 Corinthians 2:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16For who hath come to know the mind of the Lord, that shall instruct him? But, we, have, the mind of Christ.

Berean · Standard Bible

16“For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Genesis 3:8Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8Then heard they the sound of Yahweh God, walking to and fro in the garden at the breeze of the day,—so he hid himself—the man with his wife, from the face of Yahweh God, amid the trees of the garden.

Berean · Standard Bible

8Then the man and his wife heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the breeze of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

1.7Mindsets

“I’m so glad I get to go to work today.” “I hate my stupid job.” That is mindset. A man who is always “fantastic” has trained himself, not by being phony, but because God is at work even in a very hard day.

Every thought is supposed to pass through eight gates: true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, praiseworthy. Most of us pass a thought through the first gate (“well, it’s true”) and think that is enough. Gossip can be true and still fail the other seven.

Do not be conformed, poured into the mold like Jell-O, to this culture, its politics, fear, lust and greed. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that by testing your thoughts you discern God’s good, acceptable and perfect will.

Philippians 4:8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8For the rest, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are dignified, whatsoever things are righteous, whatsoever things are chaste, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report,—if there be any virtue, and if any praise, the same, be taking into account;

Berean · Standard Bible

8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.

Romans 12:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2And be not configuring yourselves unto this age, but be transforming yourselves by the renewing of your mind, to the end ye may be proving what is the thing willed by God—the good and acceptable and perfect.

Berean · Standard Bible

2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

1.8It Is Go Time

Scripture speaks of our life as a house: God’s house, built on sand or on rock. After decades of neglect it is easy to say, “I’m too tired to start a radical process of changing my default to faith.” But it is go time, today, not someday. You cannot renovate this house by legalism on your own. God can send angels to do what you cannot do yourself.

Hebrews 3:6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6But, Christ, as, a Son, over his house,—whose house are, we,—if, the freedom of speech and boast of the hope, [throughout, firm,] we hold fast.

Berean · Standard Bible

6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope of which we boast.

Matthew 7:24-26

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

24Every one, therefore, who heareth [these] my words, and doeth them, shall be likened to a prudent man, who built his house upon the rock; 25And the rain descended, and the streams came, and the winds blew, and rushed against that house, and it fell not; for it had been founded upon the rock. 26And every one who heareth these my words, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand;

Berean · Standard Bible

24Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

Part 2 of 7

Begotten, Not Adopted

If we do not understand that we have been begotten by God, we cannot claim the authority of sons, and faith has nothing to stand on.

Watch Part 2 on YouTube

2.1God’s Intent from the Beginning

God set out to make man in His image and then bring him into His likeness, an inward likeness. These two verses can become wall plaques we know by heart. But another being, Satan, is just as intent that we never grasp them in the depths of who we are. He is in the business of identity theft.

Genesis 1:26Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26And God said—Let us make man in our image after our likeness—and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the bird of the heavens and over the tame-beast—and over all the land, and over every creeping thing, that creepeth on the land.

Berean · Standard Bible

26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”

Galatians 3:26

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26For ye, all, are, sons of God, through the faith in Christ Jesus;

Berean · Standard Bible

26You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 6:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18And will become your Father, and, ye, shall become my sons and daughters, saith [the] Lord Almighty.

Berean · Standard Bible

18And: “I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

2.2The Only Begotten Son

Jesus is rightly called the only begotten Son. He was the only person physically begotten by a direct miracle, when the power of the Most High overshadowed Mary. But at the time the Gospels describe, He was the only begotten. No New Testament verse calls the resurrected Christ “the only begotten.” He became the firstborn of a new creation, opening the door for other spiritually begotten sons.

John 1:14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14And, the Word, became, flesh, and pitched his tent among us, and we gazed upon his glory,—a glory, as an Only-begotten from his Father. Full of favour and truth.

Berean · Standard Bible

14The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18No one, hath seen, God, at any time: An Only Begotten God, The One existing within the bosom of the Father, He, hath interpreted [him].

Berean · Standard Bible

18No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is at the Father’s side, has made Him known.

John 3:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16For God, so loved, the world, that, his Only Begotten Son, he gave,—that, whosoever believeth on him, might not perish, but have life age-abiding.

Berean · Standard Bible

16For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18He that believeth on him, is not to be judged: he that believeth not, already, hath been judged,—because he hath not believed on the name of the Only Begotten Son of God.

Berean · Standard Bible

18Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

Luke 1:35Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

35And answering, the messenger said unto her—The Holy Spirit, shall come upon thee, and, the power of the Most High, shall overshadow thee; wherefore, even that which is to be born, Holy, shall be called, Son of God.

Berean · Standard Bible

35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.

2.3The Firstborn Among Many Brethren

You never call someone firstborn unless other children follow. Christ is the firstborn from the dead, who will never die again, with an indestructible life. Acts 13 even applies “You are My Son; today I have begotten You” to His resurrection: a spiritual beginning that opened the new creation.

Colossians 1:15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

15Who, is an image of the unseen God, Firstborn of all creation,—

Berean · Standard Bible

15The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

Colossians 1:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18And, he, is the head of the body, the assembly, Who is the beginning, Firstborn from among the dead, in order that, he, might become, in all things, himself, pre-eminent;—

Berean · Standard Bible

18And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and firstborn from among the dead, so that in all things He may have preeminence.

Hebrews 7:16Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16Who, not according to a law of commandment dealing with the flesh, hath arisen, but according to the power of an indissoluble life;

Berean · Standard Bible

16one who has become a priest not by a law of succession, but by the power of an indestructible life.

Acts 13:32-33

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

32We, therefore, unto you, bring the good news, as to the promise which, unto our fathers, was made,— 33That God hath fulfilled, the same, for our children, by raising up Jesus: as also, in the second psalm, it is written—My son, art, thou: I, this day, have begotten thee.

Berean · Standard Bible

32And now we proclaim to you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33He has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son; today I have become Your Father.’

2.4Not Merely Adopted

A teaching runs under the surface of the whole global church: Jesus is the only begotten, and the rest of us are adopted. It sounds humble, but it leaves believers saying, “I’m not a real son. I’m adopted.”

Scripture says we are conformed to the image of His Son so that He would be firstborn among many brothers. God is bringing many sons to glory. Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers, and He declares, “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.” He did not go to the cross to remain an only child.

Romans 8:29

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

29For, whom he fore-approved, he also fore-appointed to be conformed unto the image of his Son, that he might be firstborn among many brethren,—

Berean · Standard Bible

29For those God foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers.

Hebrews 2:10-13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10For it was becoming in him—For the sake of whom are the all things, and by means of whom are the all things,—when, many sons, unto glory, he would lead, The Princely Leader of their salvation, through sufferings, to make perfect. 11For, both he that maketh holy, and they who are being made holy, are, all, of One; For which cause, he is not ashamed to be calling them, brethren, 12saying—I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of an assembly, will I sing praise unto thee; 13and again—I, will be confident upon him; and again—Lo! I, and the children which, unto me, God, hath given.

Berean · Standard Bible

10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing Your praises in the assembly.” 13And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”

2.5Begotten from Above

The literal Greek in John 3 is “unless one is begotten from above.” That must mean we have been begotten by God. It is a reality, not a phrase. Our spiritual birth came out of heaven as supernaturally as the birth of Christ.

The first time Jesus called the disciples “brothers” was on the morning of His resurrection. We were begotten by an incorruptible seed that cannot change.

John 3:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Jesus answered, and said unto him—Verily, verily, I say unto thee: Except one be born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Berean · Standard Bible

3Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

John 20:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17Jesus saith unto her—Be not detaining me, for, not yet, have I ascended unto the Father; but be going unto my disciples, and say unto them—I am ascending unto my Father and your Father, and my God and your God.

Berean · Standard Bible

17“Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and tell My brothers, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”

1 Peter 1:23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23Having been regenerated—Not out of corruptible seed, but incorruptible—through means of the word of a Living and Abiding God;

Berean · Standard Bible

23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

2.6The Orphan Spirit

Millions of Christians live with an orphan spirit: fatherless, unable to say “Abba,” feeling like the foster child who frustrates God. If you have been born from above, you are a full son or daughter with all the privileges, a joint heir with Christ. We will never be the King of Kings, but we are His brothers.

That is why faith can be outrageous. To those who received Him, He gave authority to become sons of God. And all of it rests on a Father who cannot fail, cannot lie and cannot break a promise, and who can do more than we ask or think. So why ask small?

You can’t get to somewhere you already are. We’re begotten sons.

Pastor Jamie
Romans 8:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17And, if children, heirs also—heirs, indeed, of God, but co-heirs with Christ,—if, at least, we are suffering together, in order that we may also be glorified together.

Berean · Standard Bible

17And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with Him, so that we may also be glorified with Him.

John 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12But, as many as did receive him, he gave, unto them, authority, children of God, to become,—unto them who were believing on his name:

Berean · Standard Bible

12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—

Ephesians 3:20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

20Now, unto him who is able to do, above all things, exceeding abundantly above the things which we ask or conceive,—according to the power which doth energise itself within us,—

Berean · Standard Bible

20Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us,

2.7A Spirit of Slavery

Scripture links the orphan spirit with a spirit of slavery. In the Roman Empire very few were citizens; most had no rights. A slave has no vision and no goals, only work. Sons have privileges, and the Father dearly loves us.

Acts 16:37Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

37But, Paul, said unto them—Beating us, in public, uncondemned, men that are Romans, they thrust us into prison;—and, now, by stealth, are they thrusting us forth? Nay, verily! but let them come, themselves, and lead us out!

Berean · Standard Bible

37But Paul said to the officers, “They beat us publicly without a trial and threw us into prison, even though we are Roman citizens. And now do they want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! Let them come themselves and escort us out!”

2.8Placed as Sons

“Adoption” in Romans 8:15 means being placed as a son. In Jewish culture a father would take his maturing son to the city gate and declare, “This is my son. He now has full authority to act for me.” He might even hand him the signet ring. The son’s word in the market was the father’s word.

We did not receive a spirit of slavery that drags us back into fear and its constant “I’m sorry, I’m so bad.” We received the spirit of being placed as mature sons who represent God. So we cry out, “Abba, dear Father.” As He is, so are we in this world.

Romans 8:15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

15For ye have not received a spirit of servitude, leading back into fear, but ye have received a spirit of sonship, whereby we are exclaiming—Abba! Oh Father!

Berean · Standard Bible

15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

1 John 4:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17Herein, hath love with us, been made perfect,—in order that, boldness, we might have in the day of judging,—in that, just as, He, is, we also, are, in this world.

Berean · Standard Bible

17In this way, love has been perfected among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment; for in this world we are just like Him.

2.9Ambassadors and Sons

We are not screw-ups and weaklings. We are real sons placed in the marketplace of this world to represent God, as though God Himself were pleading through us, “Be reconciled to God.” A slave does not stay in the house forever, but a son stays forever. Predestined to be placed as sons. Redeemed so that we might receive the placing as sons.

Born-again believers are the most powerful people on earth. Jesus was the most powerful man who ever lived, and His life looked like humility, loss and sacrificial love.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17On the contrary, now, no longer, are we gaining it. So that, if any one is in Christ, there is a new creation! the old things, have passed away,—Lo! they have become new!

Berean · Standard Bible

17Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!

2 Corinthians 5:20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

20In behalf of Christ, therefore, are we ambassadors,—as if God were beseeching through us: we entreat, in behalf of Christ,—be reconciled unto God!

Berean · Standard Bible

20Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God.

John 8:35

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

35Now, the slave, doth not abide in the house, evermore. The Son, abideth, evermore.

Berean · Standard Bible

35A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son belongs to it forever.

Ephesians 1:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5marking us out beforehand unto sonship, through Jesus Christ, for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

Berean · Standard Bible

5He predestined us for adoption as His sons through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of His will,

Galatians 4:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5That, them who were under law, he might redeem, that, the sonship, we might duly receive;—

Berean · Standard Bible

5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive our adoption as sons.

2.10A God Who Has Sons

The Quran says of Allah, “How could he have a son when he does not have a companion?” In Islam God has no sons, and no one can know if they are accepted. Imagine the emptiness that produces.

The same Greek word runs through “Abraham begat Isaac,” “Mary, of whom Jesus was begotten,” and “born of God.” Translators say “begotten” for Jesus and “born” for us, but it is the same word. We were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, but of God.

Matthew 1:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2Abraham begat Isaac, and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob, begat Judah and his brethren;

Berean · Standard Bible

2Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.

Matthew 1:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus,—who is called Christ.

Berean · Standard Bible

John 1:13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

13Who—not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but—of God, were born.

Berean · Standard Bible

13children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.

2.11Love the Ones He Has Begotten

The person you are bitter with in church has been begotten by God. Whoever loves the Father must also love those begotten by Him. That takes away our right to hate and to stay unforgiving.

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit: “You’re My son. You’re My daughter.” See what great love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and we are. That is why the world does not know us. This reality authorizes our faith life.

1 John 4:21

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

21And, this commandment, have we from him,—that, he who loveth God, love, his brother also.

Berean · Standard Bible

21And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well.

1 John 5:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1Whosoever believeth that, Jesus, is the Christ, of God, hath been born: and, whosoever loveth him that begat, loveth him that hath been begotten of him.

Berean · Standard Bible

1Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him.

Romans 8:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16The Spirit itself, beareth witness together with our spirit that we are children of God;

Berean · Standard Bible

1 John 3:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1Behold, what manner of love, the Father hath bestowed upon us—that, children of God, we should be called,—and such we are! Therefore, the world understandeth us not, because it understood not him.

Berean · Standard Bible

1Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.

2 Corinthians 2:16Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16In these, indeed, a fragrance out of death into death, but, in those, a fragrance out of life into life. And, for these things, who is sufficient?

Berean · Standard Bible

16To the one, we are an odor of death and demise; to the other, a fragrance that brings life. And who is qualified for such a task?

2.12What Does Fear Give You?

Sin gives people at least a rush. So what does fear give? Only one thing: an excuse to lower your hopes, faith and vision, to bring everything down to what you can do as a human. It causes pain and misery and pays back nothing but the right to expect less from this life.

Part 3 of 7

The Forerunner and the Seed

John the Baptist prepared the way in the wilderness. At the end of this age we are called to do the same, in the spirit and power of Elijah, believing God’s word.

3.1The Promised Messiah

There are dozens of clear messianic prophecies: a prophet like Moses, the forsaken cry and pierced hands of Psalm 22, the suffering servant of Isaiah 53. Israel pictured only a reigning Messiah and missed that He must first suffer, then reign. God’s story for our lives follows the same order: if we endure, we will reign with Him.

Deuteronomy 18:15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

15A prophet out of thy midst of thy brethren like unto me, will Yahweh thy God, raise up unto thee—unto him, shall ye hearken:

Berean · Standard Bible

15The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him.

Deuteronomy 18:18-19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18A prophet, will I raise up unto them, out of the midst of their brethren, like unto thee,—and I will put my words in his mouth, so shall he speak unto them whatsoever I shall command him. 19And it shall come to pass, that, the man who will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I, myself will require it of him.

Berean · Standard Bible

18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put My words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen to My words that the prophet speaks in My name.

Psalm 22:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1My GOD, my GOD, why hast thou forsaken me? Far from saving me, The words of my loud lamentation?

Berean · Standard Bible

Berean · Standard Bible

16For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet.

Isaiah 53:5Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5Yet, he, was pierced for transgressions that were ours, was crushed for iniquities that were ours,—the chastisement for our well-being, was upon him, And by his stripes, there is healing for us.

Berean · Standard Bible

5But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

2 Timothy 2:12

Hebrews 1:1-2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1Whereas, in many parts and in many ways of old, God spake unto the fathers, in the prophets, 2At the end of these days, He hath spoken unto us in his Son,—whom he hath appointed heir of all things, through whom also he hath made the ages;

Berean · Standard Bible

1On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. 2But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.

2 Corinthians 5:19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19How that, God, was in Christ, reconciling, a world, unto himself, not reckoning, unto them, their offences,—and hath put, in us, the reconciling discourse.

Berean · Standard Bible

19that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting men’s trespasses against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

3.2Forerunners at the End of the Age

John announced that Christ was coming. We are at the end of this age, called to proclaim that Jesus is coming again. Scoffers will say nothing changes, but mockers do not change the facts.

Mark opens with the genesis of the gospel and the voice crying in the wilderness. Where did John proclaim Christ? In the wilderness, where Moses and Paul were also taken apart and rebuilt. If you feel you are in the wilderness, you are in good company. John also had to minister in the spirit and power of Elijah, and so do we. When the Spirit of the Lord is upon us, prison doors open.

2 Peter 3:3-4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Of this, first, taking note—that there will come, in the last of the days, with scoffing, scoffers, after their own covetings, going on, 4and saying—Where is the promise of his presence? For, since the fathers fell asleep, all things, thus remain, from the beginning of creation.

Berean · Standard Bible

3Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4“Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.”

Mark 1:1-3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

Berean · Standard Bible

1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You, who will prepare Your way.” 3“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for Him.’”

Luke 1:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

Berean · Standard Bible

20He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

3.3Zacharias and the Voice of Doubt

Gabriel announced a son to an old priest and his barren wife, and Zacharias answered, “How can I know this?” That same voice has been heard among us. Gabriel, who stands before God, replied that because Zacharias did not believe, he would be silent until the day it happened.

When we doubt God, we go silent and lose our authority to speak. Yet God’s word did not change. It “will be fulfilled in its season.” Prophetic words over our lives may take twelve years, not two days. When the child came, Zacharias sang over him, “You will be called a prophet of the Most High.” John grew strong in spirit in the desert until the day he appeared to Israel.

Luke 1:13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

13But the messenger said unto him—Do not fear, Zachariah! Inasmuch as thy supplication hath been hearkened to,—and, thy wife Elizabeth, shall bring forth a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name, John;

Berean · Standard Bible

13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.

Luke 1:18-20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18And Zachariah said unto the messenger—Whereby, shall I know this? for, I, am, aged, and, my wife, advanced in her days. 19And the messenger, answering, said unto him—I, am Gabriel,—he that standeth near before God; and have been sent forth to speak unto thee, and to deliver the joyful message unto thee, as touching these things. 20And lo! thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak until the day when these things shall come to pass; because thou didst not believe in my words,—the which shall be fulfilled for their season.

Berean · Standard Bible

18“How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.” 19“I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”

Luke 1:76

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

76And, even thou, child, prophet of the Most High, shalt be called,—for thou shall march on before the Lord, to prepare his ways,

Berean · Standard Bible

76And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for Him,

Luke 1:80

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

80And, the child, went on growing, and being strengthened in spirit, and was in the deserts, until the day he was pointed out unto Israel.

Berean · Standard Bible

80And the child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the wilderness until the time of his public appearance to Israel.

3.4Mary: “May It Happen to Me According to Your Word”

The same angel came to a virgin in Nazareth: “Greetings, you who are highly favored.” Notice there are no “mights” in the message, only “will” and “shall.” Mary’s question was open, not doubting. The Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her.

Then the verse we could stop on: nothing will be impossible with God. Mary did not understand it, but she believed it. Sometimes faith sounds like, “I don’t get it, but I believe it.”

May it happen to me according to your word.

Pastor Jamie
Luke 1:26-38

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26Now, in the sixth month, was the messenger Gabriel sent forth from God, into a city of Galilee, the name of which was Nazareth,— 27unto a virgin, betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and, the name of the virgin, was, Mary; 28and entering in unto her, he said—Joy to thee, favoured one! The Lord, be with thee! 29And, she, at the word, was greatly troubled, and began to deliberate, of what kind, this salutation, might be. 30And the messenger said unto her—Do not fear, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God,— 31And lo! thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name, Jesus: 32the same, shall be great, and, Son of the Most High, shall be called, and the Lord God, will give unto him, the throne of David his father,— 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob, unto the ages, and, of his kingdom, there shall be, no end. 34But Mary said unto the messenger—How, shall this thing be, seeing that, a man, I know not? 35And answering, the messenger said unto her—The Holy Spirit, shall come upon thee, and, the power of the Most High, shall overshadow thee; wherefore, even that which is to be born, Holy, shall be called, Son of God. 36And lo! Elizabeth thy kinswoman, even she, hath conceived a son in, her old-age;—and, this month, is, the sixth, to her, the so-called barren one; 37Because no declaration from God, shall be void of power. 38And Mary said—Lo! the handmaid of the Lord! Might it come to pass unto me, according to thy declaration. And the messenger departed from her.

Berean · Standard Bible

26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!” 34“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Look, even Elizabeth your relative has conceived a son in her old age, and she who was called barren is in her sixth month. 37For no word from God will ever fail.” 38“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it happen to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her.

Matthew 1:18

18Now the birth, of [Jesus] Christ, was, thus: His mother Mary having been betrothed to Joseph,—before they came together, she was found with child by [the] Holy Spirit.

Berean · Standard Bible

18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

John 4:24

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

24God is, spirit; and, they that worship him, in spirit and truth, must needs worship.

Berean · Standard Bible

24God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

3.5The Incarnation and the Mother of the Gods

Pastor Jamie argues that the idea of God becoming a man has roots in Greek and Roman mythology, and that Scripture describes something different: God overshadowed Mary and miraculously produced a conception within her. He traces the cult of the Great Mother of the gods (Cybele, Artemis-Diana) and its influence on later teaching about Mary. In Ephesus the crowd shouted for two hours, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

Mary herself said, “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” She needed a Savior. Christ was born because God overshadowed a virgin and created supernatural seed.

Acts 19:34

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

34But, recognizing that he was a Jew, one voice arose from all for about two hours, as they cried aloud—Great, is Diana of the Ephesians!

47And my spirit hath exulted upon God my saviour;

Berean · Standard Bible

3.6Son of David, Son of Abraham, Son of God

Matthew opens with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham, and He is the Son of God as well. Three sets of fourteen generations form an unbroken line, fulfilling God’s promise that David would never lack a man to sit on the throne.

Matthew 1:16-17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16And Jacob begat Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus,—who is called Christ. 17So then, all the generations from Abraham unto David, are, fourteen, generations, and, from David unto the removal to Babylon, fourteen, generations; and, from the removal to Babylon unto the Christ, fourteen, generations.

Berean · Standard Bible

16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.

Jeremiah 33:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17For, Thus, saith Yahweh,—There shall not be wanting to David—A man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;

Berean · Standard Bible

17For this is what the LORD says: David will never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel,

3.7The Godly Seed

From the beginning, everything yields seed after its kind. In Eden God promised enmity between the serpent’s seed and the woman’s seed: He would crush the serpent’s head, and the serpent would strike His heel at the cross.

Why the flood? Why destroy the Canaanites? Because a godly seed was in extreme danger, and Messiah had to come through a protected line. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man: normal life on the surface, eating and marrying, with deep corruption beneath, oblivious until the flood swept them away.

God promised Abraham a seed like the stars, and blessing for all nations through it, because Abraham listened to His voice. Malachi says God was “seeking a godly seed.” Now He is protecting a seed so that a virgin church can bring forth what Revelation 12 calls the man-child, coming to the unity of the faith and the full stature of Christ. The voices say it is impossible. With God nothing is impossible.

Genesis 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12And the land brought-forth vegetation—herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, whose seed is within it, after its kind, And God saw that it was good.

Berean · Standard Bible

12The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 3:14-15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14Then said Yahweh God unto the serpent—Because thou hast done this, Accursed, art thou above every tame-beast, and above every wild-beast of the field,—on thy belly, shalt thou go, and dust, shalt thou eat all the days of thy life. 15And enmity, will I put between thee, and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed,—He shall crush thy head, but, thou, shalt crush his heel.

Berean · Standard Bible

14So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and every beast of the field! On your belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life. 15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Genesis 7:4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4For in seven days more, I, am sending rain on the earth, forty days and forty nights,—so will I wipe out all the living things which I have made, from off the face of the ground.

Berean · Standard Bible

4For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living thing I have made.”

Matthew 24:37-39

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

37For, just as the days of Noah, so, will be the presence of the Son of Man; 38For, as they were in those days that were before the flood, feeding and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage,—until the day Noah entered into the ark; 39And they observed not, until the flood came and took away all together, so, will be, the presence of the Son of Man.

Berean · Standard Bible

37As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. 39And they were oblivious, until the flood came and swept them all away. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Revelation 13:15Alluded to

15And it was given unto it, to give spirit unto the image of the wild-beast, in order that the image of the wild-beast should both speak and should cause that, as many as should not do homage unto the image of the wild-beast, should be slain.

Berean · Standard Bible

15The second beast was permitted to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship it to be killed.

Deuteronomy 20:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16But of the cities of these peoples which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee as an inheritance, shalt thou not save alive, any breathing thing.

Berean · Standard Bible

16However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.

Genesis 15:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7He that hath an ear, let him hear what, the Spirit, is saying unto the assemblies. Unto him that overcometh—I will give, unto him, to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Berean · Standard Bible

7He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the tree of life in the Paradise of God.

Malachi 2:15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

15Now was it not, One, [who] made [you] who had, the residue of the spirit? What, then, of that One? He was seeking a godly seed. Therefore should ye take heed to your spirit, and, with the wife of thy youth, do not thou deal treacherously.

Berean · Standard Bible

15Has not the LORD made them one, having a portion of the Spirit? And why one? Because He seeks godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not break faith with the wife of your youth.

Berean · Standard Bible

13until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, as we mature to the full measure of the stature of Christ.

3.8Christ Is the Seed

The promises were spoken to Abraham and his Seed, not “seeds,” but one: Christ. The law was added until the Seed should come. And if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham’s seed. Not all who descend from Israel are Israel.

We were begotten not of perishable seed but of imperishable. The Greek word is sperma. Christ is not an only child. God’s incorruptible seed has been put inside of us.

Galatians 3:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16Now, unto Abraham, were spoken the promises—and unto his seed;—He saith not—and unto thy seeds, as of many, but, as of one—and unto thy seed, which is Christ:

Berean · Standard Bible

16The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say, “and to seeds,” meaning many, but “and to your seed,” meaning One, who is Christ.

Galatians 3:19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19Why, then, the law? Because of the transgressions, it was added, until such time as the seed should come, unto whom the promise had been made, and was given in charge through messengers, at the hand of a mediator;

Berean · Standard Bible

19Why then was the law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the seed to whom the promise referred. It was administered through angels by a mediator.

Galatians 3:29

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

29Now, if, ye, are of Christ, by consequence ye are, Abraham’s seed, according to promise, heirs.

Berean · Standard Bible

29And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.

Romans 9:6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6It is not, however, as though the word of God had failed; for, not all they who are of Israel, the same are Israel.

Berean · Standard Bible

6It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

1 Peter 1:23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23Having been regenerated—Not out of corruptible seed, but incorruptible—through means of the word of a Living and Abiding God;

Berean · Standard Bible

23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

3.9Hebrews: Superior to the Angels

Hebrews contrasts Christ with the angels, because believers were drifting into angel worship. The Son is heir of all things, the radiance and exact expression of God. Jesus has a God: “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ.” To which angel did God ever say, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You”? And when He brings the Firstborn into the world again at His return, all God’s angels worship Him.

Angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation, which means you and me. Christ was made a little lower than the angels to taste death for everyone. We do not yet see all things put under Him, which is why the battle still rages against principalities, not political parties.

He is bringing many sons to glory and declares the Father’s name to His brothers. Because He Himself suffered when tempted, He is able to help us. His temptation was real.

Read Hebrews 1 and 2 in one sitting. You don’t get the context or the power from one verse here and one there.

Hebrews 1:2-6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2At the end of these days, He hath spoken unto us in his Son,—whom he hath appointed heir of all things, through whom also he hath made the ages; 3Who, being an eradiated brightness of his glory, and an exact representation of his very being, also bearing up all things by the utterance of his power, purification of sins, having achieved, sat down on the right hand of the majesty in high places: 4By so much becoming superior to the messengers, by as much as, going beyond them, he hath inherited a more distinguished name. 5For unto which of the messengers said he at any time—My Son, art, thou, I, this day have begotten thee? and again—I, will become, his father, and, he, shall become my Son? 6But, whensoever he again introduceth the first-begotten into the habitable earth, he saith—And let all God’s messengers worship him!

Berean · Standard Bible

2But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. 3The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. 4So He became as far superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is excellent beyond theirs. 5For to which of the angels did God ever say: “You are My Son; today I have become Your Father”? Or again: “I will be His Father, and He will be My Son”? 6And again, when God brings His firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all God’s angels worship Him.”

Ephesians 1:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17That, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, would give you a Spirit of wisdom and understanding in gaining a personal knowledge of him,—

Berean · Standard Bible

17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him.

Hebrews 2:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5For, not unto messengers, hath he subjected the coming habitable earth of which we are speaking;

Berean · Standard Bible

5For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.

Hebrews 1:14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14Are they not, all, spirits, doing public service,—for ministry, sent forth, for the sake of them who are about to inherit salvation?

Berean · Standard Bible

14Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Hebrews 2:6-8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6But one somewhere hath borne witness, saying—What is man, that thou shouldst make mention of him? Or the son of man, that thou shouldst put him in charge? 7Thou hast made him less, some little, than messengers, With glory and honour, hast thou crowned him,— [And hast set him over the works of thy hands]; 8All things, hast thou subjected beneath his feet. For, in subjecting, [to him] the all things, nothing, left he, to him unsubjected; But now, not yet, do we see, to him, the all things subjected;—

Berean · Standard Bible

6But somewhere it is testified in these words: “What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him? 7You made him a little lower than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor 8and placed everything under his feet.” When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.

Revelation 13:8Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8And all they who are dwelling upon the earth will do homage unto him,—[every one] whose name is not written in the scroll of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Berean · Standard Bible

8And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written from the foundation of the world in the Book of Life belonging to the Lamb who was slain.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

21For, since indeed, through a man, came death, through a man, also cometh the raising of the dead; 22For, just as, in the Adam, all die, so, also, in the Christ, shall all be made alive.

Berean · Standard Bible

21For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:25

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

25For he must needs reign, until he shall put all his enemies under his feet:

Berean · Standard Bible

25For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.

Ephesians 6:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12Because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but, against the principalities, against the authorities, against the world-holders, of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenlies.

Berean · Standard Bible

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Hebrews 2:9-10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9But, Jesus, made some little less than messengers, we do behold: by reason of the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour, to the end that, by favour of God, in behalf of every one, he might taste of death. 10For it was becoming in him—For the sake of whom are the all things, and by means of whom are the all things,—when, many sons, unto glory, he would lead, The Princely Leader of their salvation, through sufferings, to make perfect.

Berean · Standard Bible

9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. 10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 2:12-13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12saying—I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of an assembly, will I sing praise unto thee; 13and again—I, will be confident upon him; and again—Lo! I, and the children which, unto me, God, hath given.

Berean · Standard Bible

12He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing Your praises in the assembly.” 13And again: “I will put My trust in Him.” And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”

Hebrews 2:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18For, in that, he, suffered when tested, he is able, unto them who are being tested, to give succour.

Berean · Standard Bible

18Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

John 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12But, as many as did receive him, he gave, unto them, authority, children of God, to become,—unto them who were believing on his name:

Berean · Standard Bible

12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—

3.10Conclusion: Be Forerunners

There is far more to the story than a manger. The angels sang because the Seed had come to bring eternal life to millions. Now we are the forerunners saying, “Prepare the way of the Lord.” We may be in the wilderness, but He is coming, and we need the spirit and power of Elijah.

The enemy wants to disarm us. So guard your mouth. Do not gossip or create disunity. If something is wrong, go to the person. The devil is the accuser of the brothers. Do not apply for a job in his office.

Revelation 12:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying—Now, hath come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; because the accuser of our brethren hath been cast out, who was accusing them before our God day and night;

Berean · Standard Bible

10And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ. For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down— he who accuses them day and night before our God.

Part 4 of 7

Unconventional Warfare

The enemy’s constant aim is to disarm us. But we already have weapons, and they work in the Spirit, not the flesh.

Watch Part 4 on YouTube

4.1You Already Have Weapons

We spend much of the Christian life trying to get somewhere we already are. Scripture speaks of “the weapons of our warfare,” which means we have them. In the same way, by one offering Christ has perfected forever those being made holy. God has put our sins behind His back and cast them into the depths of the sea. Corrie ten Boom said He posted a “No Fishing” sign, yet we go fishing three or four times a week.

He was sacrificed once for all. You cannot become the sacrifice for your own sins.

2 Corinthians 10:4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4For, the weapons of our warfare, are not fleshly, but mighty, by God, unto a pulling down of strongholds,—

Berean · Standard Bible

4The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Hebrews 10:14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14For, by one offering, hath he perfected for evermore, them who are being made holy.

Berean · Standard Bible

14because by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified.

Isaiah 38:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17Lo! for well-being, I had bitterness—bitterness,—But, thou, cleaving unto my soul, hast raised me from the pit of corruption, For thou hast cast, behind thy back all my sins.

Berean · Standard Bible

17Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

Micah 7:19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19He will again have compassion upon us, he will subdue our iniquities,—Thou wilt cast—into the depths of the sea—all their sins.

Berean · Standard Bible

19He will again have compassion on us; He will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast out all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Psalm 19:7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7The, law of Yahweh, is complete, Bringing back the soul, The, testimony of Yahweh, is confirmed, Making wise the simple;

Berean · Standard Bible

7The Law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple.

Hebrews 10:10Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10By which will, we have been made holy, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all.

Berean · Standard Bible

10And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

4.2Demons Are Insecure

A friend saw a vision of a huge black demon cast against a wall in a dark alley. When he reached the corner, it was a tiny demon standing in front of a bright light, throwing a giant shadow. Demons live in constant fear (“Have You come to torment us?”) and try to hand us their own fear and self-hatred. They have real power in certain areas, but we are not to fear them.

I’m not picking up what you’re laying down.

Pastor Jamie
Matthew 8:29

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

29and lo! they cried aloud, saying, What have we in common with thee, O Son of God? Hast thou come hither, before the right time, to torment us?

Berean · Standard Bible

29“What do You want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

Luke 8:31

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

31And they were beseeching him that he would not order them, into the abyss, to depart.

Berean · Standard Bible

31And the demons kept begging Jesus not to order them to go into the Abyss.

4.3Call the Coroner

Like the show “Call the Midwife,” the Lord said, “Call the coroner. Learn the causes of death in Christians’ lives.” Some is hardening of the arteries: hurts and wounds slowly cutting off the flow. Some is spiritual diabetes: nothing but sugary, comfortable messages. The worst is spiritual suicide, walking away from God because we are tired of the trials.

4.4“I Will Destroy Your Enemies”

God told Israel that all they had to do was believe Him, because He would destroy the Amorites, Hittites and every other “-ite.” Every one of those promises was an “I will” from Yahweh. He makes the same promise about the enemies that trouble our lives.

Exodus 23:23Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23for my messenger shall go before thee, and bring thee in—unto the Amorite and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite and the Jebusite,—so will I destroy them.

Berean · Standard Bible

23For My angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will annihilate them.

4.5The Wages of Sin

Death was never God’s plan. It came through sin. And sin is broader than we think: whatever is not of faith is sin, missing the mark. Every time we choose unbelief over faith, there is a payment of death, something that has to die because it is not congruent with God. That is why our outer self is wasting away even as our inner self is renewed.

The longer we let something stay, the more painful the death that separates us from it. The church treats unbelief as minor, but to God it is huge, because it negates everything He is doing. So He says, “Choose life.”

Romans 6:23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23For, the wages of sin, is death; but, God’s gift of favour, is life age-abiding, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Berean · Standard Bible

23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 14:23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23But, he that is in doubt, if he eat, hath condemned himself,—because, [it was] not of faith, and, everything which is not of faith, is sin.

Berean · Standard Bible

23But the one who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16Wherefore we faint not, but, even if, our outer man, is decaying, nevertheless, our inner [man], is renewing day by day.

Berean · Standard Bible

16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Deuteronomy 30:19Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19I call to witness against you to-day, the heavens and the earth, that life and death, have I set before thee, the blessing and the curse,—therefore shouldest thou choose life, that thou mayest live, thou and thy seed;

Berean · Standard Bible

19I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing. Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,

4.6God’s Farm

God is not mocked. Whatever we sow, we reap. Most believers sow in patches: wheat during worship, tares when the kids act up. You are God’s farm, and patchwork makes it hard to see what is growing.

If we would judge ourselves, examining and separating what is good from what is not, we would not be judged with the world. This examination (diakrino) must be done in faith, not in shame or self-flagellation.

Galatians 6:7-8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7Be not deceiving yourselves! God, is not to be mocked; for, whatsoever a man soweth, the same, shall he also reap,— 8Because, he that soweth into his own flesh, out of the flesh, shall reap corruption, whereas, he that soweth into the Spirit, out of the Spirit, shall reap age-abiding life.

Berean · Standard Bible

7Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return. 8The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.

1 Corinthians 3:9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9For we are, God’s, fellow-workmen: ye are, God’s, farm, God’s building.

Berean · Standard Bible

9For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.

1 Corinthians 11:31-32

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

31If, however, we had been setting, ourselves, apart, we had not, in that case, been coming under judgment; 32But, being brought under judgment, by the Lord, are we being disciplined, lest, with the world, we should be condemned.

Berean · Standard Bible

31Now if we judged ourselves properly, we would not come under judgment. 32But when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

4.7Encountering Reality

Paul refused to come with the wisdom of this world. At fifteen, Pastor Jamie rode a train to Yakima with five joints in his bag. David Wilkerson spoke for five minutes and he was under such conviction he could hardly breathe. He ran forward sobbing and flushed them that night. He had encountered reality. People do not need “God bless you, that’s fine.” They need to collide with the reality of a living God. Paul said, “We warn every man.”

1 Corinthians 2:4-5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4And, my discourse, and what I proclaimed, were not in suasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of Spirit and power: 5In order that, your faith, might not be in men’s wisdom, but in God’s power.

Berean · Standard Bible

4My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5so that your faith would not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.

Colossians 1:28

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

28Whom we are declaring, admonishing every man, and teaching every man, in all wisdom, in order that we may present every man complete in Christ;

Berean · Standard Bible

28We proclaim Him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.

4.8Not According to the Flesh

We live in the flesh, our natural human nature in a mortal body, but we do not wage war according to it. From childhood we are taught how life works, and much of it contradicts God’s way: “If it’s going to be done, I’m the one.” “Trust your heart.” But the heart is deceitful. Warring in the Spirit will feel awkward, because it runs against our habits of religion, duty and good ideas.

2 Corinthians 10:3-4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3For, though, in flesh, we walk, not, according to flesh, do we war,— 4For, the weapons of our warfare, are not fleshly, but mighty, by God, unto a pulling down of strongholds,—

Berean · Standard Bible

3For though we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh. 4The weapons of our warfare are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Jeremiah 17:9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9Deceitful is the heart above all things And, dangerously wayward,—Who can know it?

Berean · Standard Bible

9The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

4.9The Submarine Captain

In 1944 Commander Samuel Dealey found the Japanese fleet at Tawi-Tawi and was spotted by a destroyer. Doctrine said dive deep and hope. Fifty-two US submarines had been lost following that doctrine with an 8% success rate. Dealey turned and charged the destroyer, fired at 900 yards and sank it. Pearl Harbor told him never to do it again. Days later he did it again. In three days he sank four destroyers.

We carry plenty of natural “doctrine” that is not of faith. Sometimes we have to go straight at the enemy and say, “Enough is enough.”

4.10Demons Don’t Fear Bullets

Our weapons are not of the flesh. They have divine power to demolish strongholds. Pastor Jamie’s son woke to an intruder in his kitchen and raised a 9mm. The figure said, “You think I’m afraid of your bullets?” In the name of Jesus it vanished, then reappeared on the couch watching Christian TV, unbothered, until he commanded it again in Jesus’ name. We do not wrestle against flesh and blood.

4.11Arguments Against the Knowledge of God

The strongholds are not first of all sex, drugs or big deceptions. They are arguments and presumptions raised against the knowledge of God, and that is the battleground. Faith insists on agreeing with everything we know about God in the moment of battle: “I don’t feel a thing, but great is Your faithfulness. Your mercies are new every morning.”

God will not bring to mind scriptures we have never read, so we need a bank account of the word. David hid the word in his heart so he would not sin, yet he numbered Israel out of fear. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways.

2 Corinthians 10:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5When we pull down, calculations, and every height that uplifteth itself against the knowledge of God, and when we bring into captivity every thought unto the obedience of the Christ,

Berean · Standard Bible

5We tear down arguments and every presumption set up against the knowledge of God; and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Lamentations 3:22-23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

22The lovingkindnesses of Yahweh, verily they are not exhausted, Verily! not at an end, are his compassions: 23New things for the mornings! Abundant is thy faithfulness:

Berean · Standard Bible

22Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. 23They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!

Psalm 119:11

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

11In my heart, have I treasured what thou hast said, to the end I may not sin against thee.

Berean · Standard Bible

11I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.

1 Chronicles 21:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1Then the accuser stood up, against Israel,—and moved David, to number Israel.

Berean · Standard Bible

1Then Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.

Isaiah 55:8-9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8For, my thoughts, are not, your thoughts, Nor, your ways, my ways,—Declareth Yahweh. 9For, higher, are the heavens than the earth,—So, higher, are My ways than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

Berean · Standard Bible

8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. 9“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

4.12Deep Grooves

Habits wear grooves in the brain like a record. The gambler’s truck pulls into the casino on its own. The longer a groove runs, the deeper the dying needed to break it, and we cannot beat ourselves out of it. Strongholds are like beaver dams of tangled, interlocking thoughts. It takes the dynamite of spiritual weapons.

4.13Reasonings and Speculations

Logismos means the bottom-line reasoning that shows how we assign weight: “Fear has more value to me right now than faith.” Speculations are heavily weighted guesses about the future, and in natural thinking they insist on one thing first: get God out of the equation, then solve it ourselves. We do this subconsciously, in a split second.

So we decide ahead of time and ask for new radar to notice it, so our first response becomes, “God, how are we going to solve this?” Natural weapons need legalism and effort, and they parade every past defeat as evidence. But God has come through every time. At eighteen Pastor Jamie closed the door: “I will never turn back. I don’t know how I’ll walk this out, but I believe You.”

4.14Closing Prayer

We come to the throne of grace to find mercy and help, not shame. Israel heard the message but did not mix it with faith. At Sinai they begged to be excused from hearing God’s voice. Do not refuse Him who now speaks from heaven. Prove Him. Become like little children. Like the father of the prodigal, He is running to meet us. Walk in newness of life.

Hebrews 4:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16Let us, then, be approaching with freedom of speech, unto the throne of favour, that we may receive mercy, and, favour, may find, for seasonable succour.

Berean · Standard Bible

16Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2For we have had delivered to us the joyful message, just as even, they; but the word which was heard did not profit them, they not having been blended, by faith, with the things heard.

Berean · Standard Bible

2For we also received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, since they did not share the faith of those who comprehended it.

Hebrews 12:19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19And a trumpets peal,—and a sound of things spoken:—from which they who heard excused themselves, lest there should be added to them, a word;

Berean · Standard Bible

19to a trumpet blast or to a voice that made its hearers beg that no further word be spoken.

Hebrews 12:25

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

25Beware, lest ye excuse yourselves from him that speaketh; for, if, they escaped not, who excused themselves from him who on earth was warning, how much less, shall, we, who from him that warneth from the heavens, do turn ourselves away:

Berean · Standard Bible

25See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if the people did not escape when they refused Him who warned them on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject Him who warns us from heaven?

Malachi 3:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10Bring ye all the tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, Yea, I pray you, put me to the proof hereby, saith Yahweh of hosts, whether I will not open to you the sluices of the heavens, and pour out for you blessing, until there be no room.

Berean · Standard Bible

10Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this,” says the LORD of Hosts. “See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure.

Matthew 18:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3and said—Verily, I say unto you, Except ye turn and become as the children, in nowise, shall ye enter into the kingdom of the heavens.

Berean · Standard Bible

3“Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 15:20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

20Now, while yet he was holding afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and, running, fell upon his neck, and tenderly kissed him.

Berean · Standard Bible

20So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.

Romans 6:4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4We were, therefore, buried together with him through our immersion into his death, in order that—just as Christ was raised from among the dead through the glory of the Father, so, we also, in newness of life should walk.

Berean · Standard Bible

4We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

The Hall of Faith

Hebrews 11 could just as well be called the Hall of Works: living faith always moves.

5.1Discovering Gold

“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered. The point is to discover them.” Ask God the right questions. Read in blocks of two or three chapters, because there is a flow in His word. “Iron ore cannot be educated into gold.” Some things only come by impartation from heaven, and what faith really is may be one of them.

Lift your eyes to the throne room of Revelation 4: lightning, thunder, twenty-four elders. Is He worthy? He is. No one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. And real gold is not afraid of the melting pot.

Revelation 4:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5And, out of the throne, are coming forth lightnings, and voices, and thunderings; and [there are] seven torches of fire, burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;

Berean · Standard Bible

5From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings, and peals of thunder. Before the throne burned seven torches of fire. These are the seven Spirits of God.

Matthew 11:27

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

27All things, unto me, have been delivered up by my Father; and, no one, fully knoweth the Son, save the rather, neither doth any one fully know, the Father, save, the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son, may be minded, to reveal, him.

Berean · Standard Bible

27All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.

5.2Living Faith and Dead Faith

James speaks of dead faith, and dead faith is real faith, just not living faith. We truly believe in eternity, yet we waste hours on screens. We know praying two hours a day would change our lives, yet we do not do it. That is real faith that is not activated. Living faith must come from the same heavenly source that caused us to be born from above. We receive it; we do not manufacture it.

James 2:17Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17So, also, faith, if it have not works, is dead, by itself.

Berean · Standard Bible

17So too, faith by itself, if it does not result in action, is dead.

5.3Unfathomable Change

We are on the cusp of unfathomable change: AI, mass unemployment, quantum computing. Do not look in the mirror and say, “Yeah, but...” Look into the throne room and say, “Lord, You know.” Do not disqualify yourself from a living God.

5.4Hebrews 11:1: What Faith Is

This verse is so loaded it was read in several translations. “Now” comes first: faith works right now, not someday. Without faith our hopes are whimsical. With it we become convinced of what we cannot see, like seeing a son or daughter free from meth before it happens.

Picture helium balloons tied to strings ten feet off the floor, out of reach. Faith is the ladder that climbs into the unseen realm and insists that what is real there will be real here.

Hebrews 11:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1But faith is, of things hoped for, a confidence, of facts, a conviction, when they are not seen;

Berean · Standard Bible

1Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.

Also read aloud in the teaching

  • NET Bible“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see.”
  • The Way“Now faith is a well-grounded assurance of that for which we hope … the conviction of the reality of things …”
  • Young’s Literal“And faith is of things hoped for a confidence, of matters not seen a conviction.”
  • God’s Word“Faith assures us of things we expect. It convinces us of the existence of things we cannot see.”

The “Prince James Version” · Pastor Jamie’s expanded rendering of Hebrews 11:1

Faith is the strong, fully supporting foundation, like legal evidence, that assures us of things that would merely be human hope, if not for that on-the-rock confidence that faith provides. And it’s the convincing proof of things, matters, problems, visions, prophecies that you’ve received, that faith pulls down from an unseen realm.

5.5Calling Things That Are Not as Though They Were

God told a hundred-year-old Abraham, “I have made you a father of many nations,” speaking of things that do not exist as though they do. He wants us to join Him in that realm. This is not name-it-and-claim-it. It is a heart so affected by God’s reality that we expect Him to answer.

“Who gives life to the dead.” Two verses later, Abraham considered his own body as good as dead, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not ignore the facts. He looked at them and said, “It’s going to happen.”

Romans 4:17

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

17Even as it is written—Father of many nations, have I appointed thee: before him whom he believed—God, who causeth the dead to live, and calleth the things that are not as things that are:—

Berean · Standard Bible

17As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the presence of God, in whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being what does not yet exist.

Romans 4:19

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

19And, without becoming weak in his faith, he attentively considered his own body, already deadened—he being a hundred years old, the deadening also of Sarah’s womb;

Berean · Standard Bible

19Without weakening in his faith, he acknowledged the decrepitness of his body (since he was about a hundred years old) and the lifelessness of Sarah’s womb.

5.6Enoch

By faith Enoch was taken from the earth alive, and before he was taken he received witness that he pleased God. It is a picture of the rapture, a hope many are abandoning. God wants us walking like Enoch, living the rapture in our hearts before it happens.

Christ will appear to those who are eagerly, ardently waiting for Him. Before then, men’s hearts will fail from fear of what is coming on the earth.

Hebrews 11:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5By faith, Enoch was translated, so as not to see death, and was not found, because that, God, had translated him; for, before the translation, he had received witness that he had become well-pleasing unto God;—

Berean · Standard Bible

5By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

Hebrews 9:28

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

28Thus, the Christ also, once for all having been offered, for the bearing of the sins, of many, a second time, apart from sin, will appear, to them who for him are ardently waiting—unto salvation.

Berean · Standard Bible

28so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.

Luke 21:26

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26Men fainting, from fear and expectation of the things overtaking the inhabited earth. For, the powers of the heavens, will be shaken.

Berean · Standard Bible

26Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

5.7The Plexiglass Coffin

At the end of a five-year lawsuit, Pastor Jamie saw himself in a plexiglass coffin, able to see and hear but unable to move. Many believers lie in that coffin, spiritually in a coma, unaware of the locks outside. God can dissolve the lock in a moment.

“Translated” means carried across, like a text from one language to another. Enoch was translated from the language of earth to the language of heaven. He and God walked every day, and one day they were closer to God’s house than Enoch’s.

5.8Be Transformed

None of us has all the faith we want. Ask the average church for volunteers to pray deliverance and see what happens. So we must be transformed. Do not be poured into the world’s mold (“If it’s to be, it’s up to me”). Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, which literally means to become young again in your mind. Stop being curious and you start getting old.

It is back to basics: read the Bible, pray, love people, get along in the sandbox, and do not lose your first love.

Revelation 2:4Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4Nevertheless, I have against thee, that, thy first love, thou hast left.

Berean · Standard Bible

4But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.

5.9Without Faith It Is Impossible to Please Him

Without faith it is impossible to be well-pleasing. Candles and rituals without faith do not please God. The reverse is exciting: it is impossible not to please Him when we live by faith. We must believe that He is (eimi, the great I AM) and that He is a rewarder.

He rewards those who seek Him out. Ekzeteo means to search out diligently, crave, demand. If you believed there was a real way to win a $1.4 billion jackpot, you would not google it once and quit.

Hebrews 11:6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6But, apart from faith, it is impossible to be well-pleasing; for he that approacheth unto God—must needs have faith, that he is, and that, to them who seek him out, a rewarder he becometh.

Berean · Standard Bible

6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

Exodus 3:14Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14And God said unto Moses, I Will Become whatsoever I please, And he said—Thus, shalt thou say to the sons of Israel, I Will Become hath sent me unto you.

Berean · Standard Bible

14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

5.10Noah

Noah, divinely warned about things not yet seen, was moved with awe. God is warning His church that the years ahead will not look like today. Revelation promises a blessing to those who read it. We have lost the awe of God. What are your not-yet-seens?

Imagine going to war with nuclear weapons in the arsenal and sending farmers with pellet guns instead. We have powerful weapons and a powerful God.

Hebrews 11:7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7By faith, Noah, having received intimation concerning the things not yet seen, filled with reverence, prepared an ark to the saving of his house—through which he condemned the world, and, of the righteousness by way of faith, became heir.

Berean · Standard Bible

7By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in godly fear built an ark to save his family. By faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Revelation 1:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Happy! he that readeth, and they who hear, the words of the prophecy, and keep the things, therein, written; for, the season, is, near.

Berean · Standard Bible

3Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, because the time is near.

5.11Abraham: Living as an Alien

Abraham went out not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, in tents, for years. He was not perfect, but he believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. He anticipated the city.

Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await our Savior. Without that revelation we live like unbelievers with a Christian checkbox. When we walk by faith we enjoy the whole journey, not just the arrival, and can even rejoice in fiery trials.

Hebrews 11:8-10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8By faith, being called, Abraham obeyed—to come forth into a place he was destined to receive for an inheritance; and he came forth, not well knowing whither he was coming. 9By faith, he sojourned in the land of promise, as a foreign land, in tents, dwelling, along with Isaac and Jacob, the joint-heirs of the same promise; 10For he was awaiting the city having foundations, whose architect and builder is, God.

Berean · Standard Bible

8By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, without knowing where he was going. 9By faith he dwelt in the promised land as a stranger in a foreign country. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

Romans 4:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3For what doth the Scripture say? And Abraham believed in God, and it was reckoned unto him as righteousness.

Berean · Standard Bible

3For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

Philippians 3:20

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

20For, our citizenship, in the heavens, hath its rise; wherefore, a Saviour also, do we ardently await,—The Lord Jesus Christ,—

Berean · Standard Bible

20But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Peter 4:12-13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12Beloved! be not held in surprise by the burning among you, which, for putting you to the proof, is befalling you, as though a, surprising, thing were happening unto you; 13But, in so far as ye are taking fellowship in the Christ’s sufferings, rejoice! in order that, in the revealing of his glory also, ye may rejoice with exultation:

Berean · Standard Bible

12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.

Part 6 of 7

The Currency of Heaven

Faith is the only currency heaven recognizes. God’s purposes are already settled, and faith pulls them into this realm.

Watch Part 6 on YouTube

6.1Everything in God Comes by Faith

We cannot come to God’s throne groaning and begging legalistically. Without faith it is impossible to please Him, and without faith we cannot shop in His store of riches, blessing and healing. You can be as intentional as you like, but without faith that it will do something, you will not stay intentional. Most of us are unbelieving believers.

2 Corinthians 5:7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7By faith, are we walking, not by sight;—

Berean · Standard Bible

7For we walk by faith, not by sight.

6.2Pulling Down What Is Already Real

There are things in the heavenlies, real right now, that God is waiting for us to pull into this realm. That is what a healing is. In an Indian village, a deaf fourteen-year-old girl who had never spoken heard for the first time after a simple prayer in Jesus’ name.

That night Pastor Jamie had what he calls supernatural doubtlessness. He could not doubt. He nearly missed it, too sick to get up, until a friend paced beside his bed for half an hour commanding healing. It showed him how Jesus moved: “Be healed.” “Go.” No hedging.

Hebrews 11:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1But faith is, of things hoped for, a confidence, of facts, a conviction, when they are not seen;

Berean · Standard Bible

1Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see.

6.3Sarah Received Power for Founding a Seed

Most translations say Sarah received power to conceive. The literal rendering, read here from Rotherham’s Emphasized Bible, is “power for founding a seed, even beyond the season of life’s prime.” The Greek word appears eleven times and ten times means foundation, nine of them “from the foundation of the world.” Sarah received power to lay the foundation of a lineage of millions, and everything after it relates back to that foundation on purpose.

It connects with John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Logos,” God’s inward plan, like an architect who sees the whole building or Beethoven hearing the symphony before writing it.

Hebrews 11:11

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

11By faith, even Sarah herself, received power for founding a seed, even beyond the season of life’s prime,—seeing that, faithful, she reckoned, him that had promised;

Berean · Standard Bible

11By faith Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised.

John 1:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1Originally, was, the Word, and, the Word, was, with God; and, the Word, was, God.

Berean · Standard Bible

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Matthew 25:34

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

34Then, will the king say to those on his right hand: Come ye, the blessed of my Father! Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

Berean · Standard Bible

34Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

6.4God Declares the End from the Beginning

Through Isaiah, God rebukes Israel for trusting idols and makes the same point again and again: only He can declare what has not happened yet. Covetousness is idolatry too. If God promises something, it is already done, because He is outside of time. When He reached out His hand, the Red Sea stood up like a wall.

“Yahweh of hosts has purposed, and who can frustrate it?” Often the answer is us, when we refuse to believe Him.

Isaiah 44:7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7Who then, like me, can call, and declare it, and order it, for me, Seeing that I appointed an age-abiding people,—Or things yet to be, and that shall come to pass, Let them declare on their part.

Berean · Standard Bible

7Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case before Me, since I established an ancient people. Let him foretell the things to come, and what is to take place.

Colossians 3:5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

5Make dead, therefore, your members that are on the earth—as regardeth fornication, impurity, passion, base coveting, and greed, the which, is idolatry,—

Berean · Standard Bible

5Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

Isaiah 42:9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9Things told in advance, lo! they have come to pass,—And new things, am I telling, Ere yet they spring forth, I let, you, hear them.

Berean · Standard Bible

9Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Isaiah 41:4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4Who hath wrought and performed, Calling the generations, in advance? I, Yahweh, [who am] First, And with them who are last, I, am the Same!

Berean · Standard Bible

4Who has performed this and carried it out, calling forth the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD—the first and the last— I am He.”

Isaiah 14:24

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

24Yahweh of hosts, hath sworn, saying,—Surely as I intended, so, hath it come to pass, And as I purposed, the same, shall stand:—

Berean · Standard Bible

24The LORD of Hosts has sworn: “Surely, as I have planned, so will it be; as I have purposed, so will it stand.

Isaiah 14:27

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

27For, Yahweh of hosts, hath purposed,—And who shall frustrate? And, his, is the hand outstretched, And who shall turn it back?

Berean · Standard Bible

27The LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is outstretched, so who can turn it back?

Isaiah 45:21

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

21Tell ye—and bring near, Yea let them take counsel, together,—Who let this be known aforetime. In time past, declared it? Was it not, I—Yahweh? And there is none else that is God besides me, A GOD, righteous and ready to save, There is none, besides me!

Berean · Standard Bible

21Speak up and present your case— yes, let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago? Who announced it from ancient times? Was it not I, the LORD? There is no other God but Me, a righteous God and Savior; there is none but Me.

6.5Faith Is the Currency

Hold up a twenty-dollar bill. God says, “You want healing? I need some currency.” You cannot buy it yourself. It comes by faith in the name of Jesus, which is how the lame man was healed. And He calls Himself “the Mighty One … the Adorable,” with none like Him. He is not a gray, dead God.

Acts 3:16

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

16And, by the faith of his name, unto this man whom ye see and know, hath his name given strength,—yea, the faith which is through him, hath given unto him this perfect soundness, over against you all!

Berean · Standard Bible

16By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know has been made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given him this complete healing in your presence.

Isaiah 46:9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9Remember ye the things named in advance from age-past times,—For, I, am, The Mighty One, and there is none else, The Adorable and there is none like me!

Berean · Standard Bible

9Remember what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.

6.6We Sing Because We Want Relationship

The world’s religions do not gather to sing love songs to their gods. They try to avoid trouble with idols of claws and teeth. We sing because we want relationship, and relationship comes by faith, worshiping in spirit and in truth, because God is Spirit. “This is how I fight my battles”: in the Spirit, with currency, not willpower.

John 4:24

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

24God is, spirit; and, they that worship him, in spirit and truth, must needs worship.

Berean · Standard Bible

24God is Spirit, and His worshipers must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”

6.7Suddenlies from God

God declares the end from the beginning and things not yet done, and He wants to do them, but He asks for currency, especially faith that works through love. His purpose will stand, not necessarily ours. His thoughts and ways are not ours.

“Suddenly I did them, and they came to pass.” We need suddenlies. He told Israel in advance because they were obstinate, with necks of iron, so they could not credit their idols. “From this time I make you hear new things.” Forget the regret. The hurting man next to you in line at WinCo is where God wants your currency today.

Isaiah 46:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10Declaring from the beginning, the latter end, And from olden time, that which had never been done,—Saying My purpose shall stand, and All my pleasure, will I perform;

Berean · Standard Bible

10I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will accomplish.’

Galatians 5:6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6For, in Christ [Jesus], neither, circumcision, availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but faith, through love, energising.

Berean · Standard Bible

6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. All that matters is faith, expressed through love.

Isaiah 55:8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8For, my thoughts, are not, your thoughts, Nor, your ways, my ways,—Declareth Yahweh.

Berean · Standard Bible

8“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.

Isaiah 48:3-6

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Things in advance, of old, I declared, Yea out of mine own mouth, came they forth, that I might let them be known,—Suddenly, I wrought and they came to pass. 4Because I knew that—Obstinate, thou wast,—And, a sinew of iron, was thy neck, And thy brow, brazen, 5therefore told I thee—in time past, Ere yet it came, I let thee hear,—Lest thou shouldest say Mine idol wrought them, Yea, my carved image and my molten image, commanded them! 6Thou hast heard—see it whole, And will, ye, not tell? I have let thee hear new things—from the present time, Even secrets which ye knew not.

Berean · Standard Bible

3I foretold the former things long ago; they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. 4For I knew that you are stubborn; your neck is iron and your forehead is bronze. 5Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I announced it before it came to pass, so that you could not claim, ‘My idol has done this; my carved image and molten god has ordained it.’ 6You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not acknowledge them? From now on I will tell you of new things, hidden things unknown to you.

6.8The Sacred Secret

Colossians speaks of the sacred secret hidden from the ages and now revealed: Christ in you, the hope of glory. No one understood that Messiah would suffer, die and rise. Even angels stooped to look into it.

Ephesians says God now makes known His manifold, many-colored wisdom to the principalities and powers in the heavenlies through the church, weak people like us, according to the plan of the ages He made in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 1:26-27

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26The sacred secret which had been hidden away from the ages and from the generations, but, now, hath been made manifest unto his saints— 27Unto whom God hath been pleased to make known what is the glorious wealth of this sacred secret among the nations, which is Christ in you, the hope of the glory,—

Berean · Standard Bible

26the mystery that was hidden for ages and generations but is now revealed to His saints. 27To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Ephesians 3:4-5

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4Respecting which ye can, by reading, perceive my discernment in the sacred secret of the Christ,— 5Which, in other generations, had not been made known unto the sons of men, as it hath, now, been revealed by his holy apostles and prophets, in Spirit;—

Berean · Standard Bible

4In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.

Ephesians 3:9-11

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9And to bring to light—what is the administration of the sacred secret which had been hidden away from the ages in God, who did all things create: 10In order that now, unto the principalities and the authorities in the heavenlies, might be made known, through means of the assembly, the manifold wisdom of God,— 11According to a plan of the ages which he made in the anointed Jesus our Lord,—

Berean · Standard Bible

9and to illuminate for everyone the stewardship of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. 10His purpose was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, 11according to the eternal purpose that He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Peter 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12Unto whom it was revealed—that, Not unto themselves, but unto us, they were ministering them, which things have, now, been announced unto you through them who have told you the good tidings with Holy Spirit sent forth from heaven: into which things messengers are coveting to obtain a nearer view.

Berean · Standard Bible

12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Ephesians 2:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2In which at one time ye walked, according to the age of the world, according to the prince of the authority of the air, of the spirit that now energiseth in the sons of disobedience,

Berean · Standard Bible

2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

6.9She Judged Him Faithful Who Had Promised

Back to the text: Sarah “reckoned him faithful that had promised.” There may be nothing in the Christian life more important than considering God faithful to His promises. Even spiritual warfare depends on it. If God is fulfilling the purposes He made before creation, He will fulfill His promises to us, but not on autopilot. They are bought with the currency of faith.

Hebrews 11:11

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

11By faith, even Sarah herself, received power for founding a seed, even beyond the season of life’s prime,—seeing that, faithful, she reckoned, him that had promised;

Berean · Standard Bible

11By faith Sarah, even though she was barren and beyond the proper age, was enabled to conceive a child, because she considered Him faithful who had promised.

6.10Our Default Position

When a manager lies about you and your job is on the line, what is your default? It has to become “God, You are faithful.” That does not happen by deciding in the moment. It has to be worked out in the Spirit beforehand.

We need a default for disappointment, engulfing fear, fiery trials (“Rejoice!”), aging and the fear of dementia, endless marriage or family problems, stubborn habits, and patterns of discouragement. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

James 1:2Alluded to

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2All Joy, account it, my brethren, whensoever ye fall in with, manifold, temptations,—

Berean · Standard Bible

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds,

6.11The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

You cannot go back thirty years. This is the first day of the rest of your life, unencumbered by the past. How much would you pay for perfect peace, even if nothing else changed? Ask God for joy you have never felt and for Him to visit you in the night. There is a present truth for right now.

2 Peter 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12Wherefore, I shall be certain to be, always, putting you in remembrance concerning these things,—although, indeed, ye know them, and have become confirmed in the present truth;

Berean · Standard Bible

12Therefore I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth you now have.

6.12Warfare Mode

Get mad about the lacks in your life. Do not say, “It’s just who I am.” We are at war, and the enemy feels like fighting even when we do not. Our weapons are powerful and spiritual, and faith is the only thing that makes them work. Move into warfare mode. Wear camo if you like.

6.13Closing Prayer

Lord, make us sick of the enemy winning battles in our culture, homes, finances and thought lives. Call many into prevailing intercession. Give us a free mind, peace that passes understanding, joy unspeakable and full of glory, and above all a brand-new first love.

Philippians 4:7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

7And, the peace of God, which riseth above every mind, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus.

Berean · Standard Bible

7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 1:8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8Whom, not having seen, ye love, on whom, though at present not looking, but believing, ye exult with joy unspeakable and filled with glory,

Berean · Standard Bible

8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

7.1Everyone Who Mattered Was Shattered

Elijah, after mighty miracles, lay under a broom tree asking to die. Joseph did everything right and was imprisoned, then forgotten by the cupbearer for two more years. Stephen was stoned while Peter walked out of prison. A brilliant young Christian dies in a motorcycle accident and his mother wails over the casket. Serious believers go through fiery tests, and none of it looks fair from here.

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

4But, he himself, went into the wilderness a day’s journey, and came and sat down under a certain shrub,—and asked for his life, that he might die, and said—Enough, now, O Yahweh! take away my life, for, no better, am, I, than, my fathers.

Berean · Standard Bible

4while he himself traveled on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”

Genesis 40:14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

14But if thou remember how I was with thee when it shall go well with thee, then wilt thou I pray thee do me a lovingkindness,—and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me forth out of this house;

Berean · Standard Bible

14But when it goes well for you, please remember me and show me kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh, that he might bring me out of this prison.

Genesis 40:23

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

23Yet the chief of the butlers made no mention of Joseph but did forget him.

Berean · Standard Bible

23The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot all about him.

Acts 7:59-60

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

59And they stoned Stephen, as he was invoking and saying—Lord Jesus! give welcome unto my spirit. 60And, kneeling down, he cried out with a loud voice—Lord! do not charge against them, this sin. And, having said this, he fell asleep.

Berean · Standard Bible

59While they were stoning him, Stephen appealed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60Falling on his knees, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

7.2Everything Must Be Tested

Even the highest angels were tested. Lucifer, the shining one, the anointed cherub who walked in Eden, was tested, and pride made him say, “I will make myself like the Most High.” Psalm 82 pictures God judging in the assembly of the elohim: “You are gods … yet you will die like men.” Jesus quoted it.

Most of us did not have severe mind battles until we decided to live for God. Now we are in a war instead of drifting with the cultural current.

Ezekiel 28:13-15

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

13In Eden the garden of God, thou wast. Of every precious stone, was thy covering-Sardius. topaz, and diamond, Chrysolite beryl, and jasper, Sapphire carbuncle and emerald,- And of gold, was the work of thy timbrels and thy flutes within thee, In the day thou wast created, were they prepared: 14Thou, wast the anointed cherub that covered,— When I appointed thee, in the holy mount of God, thou wast, Amid stones of fire, thou didst walk to and fro: 15Complete, wast thou in thy ways, from the day thou wast created,- Until perversity was found in thee.

Berean · Standard Bible

13You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every kind of precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald. Your mountings and settings were crafted in gold, prepared on the day of your creation. 14You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained you. You were on the holy mountain of God; you walked among the fiery stones. 15From the day you were created you were blameless in your ways— until wickedness was found in you.

Isaiah 14:13-14

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

13Yet, thou, didst say in thy heart—The heavens, will I ascend, Above the stars of GOD, will I lift up my throne,—That I may sit in the Mount of Assembly In the Recesses of the North: 14I will mount on the hills of the clouds, I will match the Most High!

Berean · Standard Bible

13You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north. 14I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.”

Psalm 82:1

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

1God, hath taken his place in the august assembly, In the midst of the gods, will he judge.

Berean · Standard Bible

1A Psalm of Asaph. God presides in the divine assembly; He renders judgment among the gods:

Psalm 82:6-7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6I, said, Gods, ye are, Yea, sons of the Highest, are ye all; 7But indeed, like the earth-born, shall ye die! And, like one of the princes, shall ye fall!

Berean · Standard Bible

6I have said, ‘You are gods; you are all sons of the Most High.’ 7But like mortals you will die, and like rulers you will fall.”

John 10:34

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

34Jesus answered them—Is it not written in your law: I, said, Ye are, gods?

Berean · Standard Bible

34Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’?

7.3Brought into His Image and Likeness

God’s first stated purpose for humanity was His image and likeness. With a fallen nature pulling toward selfishness, and accusers before God day and night, there is no magic pill. So we must be tested, or we will never know what our faith is really like.

An eighth grader who listens in class thinks he has it, until the pop quiz comes back at 64%. Faith is the only currency we have in heaven, and God is not content to let us squeak into eternity. His tests are brilliant, endlessly different and almost comically effective.

Genesis 1:26-27

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

26And God said—Let us make man in our image after our likeness—and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the bird of the heavens and over the tame-beast—and over all the land, and over every creeping thing, that creepeth on the land. 27And God created the man in his own image, In the image of God, created he him,—Male and female, created he, them.

Berean · Standard Bible

26Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” 27So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Revelation 12:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying—Now, hath come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; because the accuser of our brethren hath been cast out, who was accusing them before our God day and night;

Berean · Standard Bible

10And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of His Christ. For the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down— he who accuses them day and night before our God.

7.4The Mirror

To be brought into His likeness we have to stand in front of the mirror. A hunting buddy looked at a group photo and asked, “Who’s the bald guy?” It was him. He had no idea. God crafts testing strategically for each life, whether we grew up in chaos or behind a white picket fence.

7.5The Testing of Your Faith Produces Endurance

Perseverance (hupomone) literally means “to remain under”: cheerful, hopeful, patient steadfastness. When betrayal or sabotage comes, we remain under it without collapsing or quitting church for a month. Each test passed builds endurance for the next.

The test also shows us, from God’s perspective, where we really are. He loves us too much to leave us deluded, like the confident singer on a talent show who should not be singing.

James 1:3

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Taking note, that, the proving of your faith, worketh out endurance;

Berean · Standard Bible

3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

7.6We Rejoice in Our Sufferings

There are only two ways to rejoice in suffering: masochism, or knowing that eternity is real and God is at work. Suffering produces perseverance, the same message as James.

Romans 5:3-4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3And, not only so, but let us boast also in our tribulations; knowing that, our tribulation, worketh out endurance. 4And, our endurance, a testing, and, our testing, hope,

Berean · Standard Bible

3Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope.

7.7The God of All Comfort

He is the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles so we can comfort others with the comfort we received. If we push His comfort away, all we can offer others is crying in our suds with them. If we receive it, we have a bank account of supernatural comfort to give.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3Blessed, be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassions, and God of all encouragement, 4Who encourageth us in all our tribulation, to the end we may be able to encourage them who are in any tribulation—through means of the encouragement wherewith we, ourselves, are encouraged by God.

Berean · Standard Bible

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

7.8More Precious Than Gold

“Various trials” means multicolored, every kind. Faith is more precious than gold because it gains eternal rewards that no one can steal. Gold is nearly indestructible, yet it will perish. Proven faith results in praise, glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 1:6-7

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

6Wherein ye exult, though, for a little, just now, if needful, put to grief in manifold temptations, 7In order that the proving of your faith—much more precious than of gold that perisheth even though, by means of fire, it is proved—may be found unto praise and glory and honour in the revealing of Jesus Christ,—

Berean · Standard Bible

6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials 7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

7.9Discipline

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. There is no disciplinarian like our Father, and only legitimate children are disciplined. Afterward it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace for those trained by it, and training lasts a lifetime.

Hebrews 12:11

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

11But, no discipline, for the present, indeed, seemeth to be of joy, but of sorrow: afterwards, however—to them who thereby have been trained, it yieldeth peaceful fruit, of righteousness.

Berean · Standard Bible

11No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields a harvest of righteousness and peace to those who have been trained by it.

Hebrews 12:8

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8If however ye are without discipline, whereof, all, have received a share, then, are ye, bastards, and, not sons.

Berean · Standard Bible

8If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.

7.10The Fiery Trial

“Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial,” and the word means smelting, a furnace so hot men can barely work in front of it. A two-year-old with stage 4 leukemia. “Why is this happening to me?” Because He loves you. And then that word again: rejoice, because you share in Christ’s sufferings.

Christ was made perfect through what He suffered. Paul even speaks of filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body. Our will has to break, not our spirit, so that we are overjoyed when His glory is revealed and stand blameless before Him.

Hebrews 2:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10For it was becoming in him—For the sake of whom are the all things, and by means of whom are the all things,—when, many sons, unto glory, he would lead, The Princely Leader of their salvation, through sufferings, to make perfect.

Berean · Standard Bible

10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering.

Hebrews 5:8-9

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

8Even though he was a son, yet learned, from what things he suffered, obedience; 9And, being made perfect, became, to all them that obey him, Author of salvation age-abiding;

Berean · Standard Bible

8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered. 9And having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him

Colossians 1:24

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

24Now, am I rejoicing in the sufferings on your behalf, and am filling up the things that lack of the tribulations of the Christ, in my flesh, in behalf of his body, which is the assembly,

Berean · Standard Bible

24Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I fill up in my flesh what is lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions for the sake of His body, which is the church.

Colossians 1:22

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

22In his body of flesh, through means of his death, to present you holy and blameless and unaccusable before him,—

Berean · Standard Bible

22But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy, unblemished, and blameless in His presence—

7.11“Well Done”

Imagine the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, saying, “I allowed you to go through smelting-hot things. You didn’t pass them all, but well done. Enter into the joy I’ve been preparing for you.”

Matthew 25:21

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

21His lord said unto him—Well-done! good and faithful servant,—Over a few things wast thou faithful, over many things, will I appoint thee: Enter into the joy of thy lord.

Berean · Standard Bible

21His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master!’

7.12You Were Destined for This

Paul sent Timothy so no one would be shaken by these trials. “You know we were destined for them.” He kept warning them they would suffer, and it came to pass. Some trials come from our own foolishness, and some, like Joseph’s, come from nothing we did, because God wants to bring us higher, to gold rather than wood, hay and stubble.

Everyone who desires to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Which part of “all” do we not understand? Often people would like us fine. It is the Jesus in us they cannot stand.

1 Thessalonians 3:3-4

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

3That, no one, might be shrinking back in these tribulations. For ye, yourselves, know, that, hereunto, are we appointed; 4For, even when we were with you, we told you beforehand—we are destined to suffer tribulation! even as it also came to pass, and ye know.

Berean · Standard Bible

3so that none of you would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this. 4Indeed, when we were with you, we kept warning you that we would suffer persecution; and as you know, it has come to pass.

1 Corinthians 3:12-13

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12But, if anyone is building, upon the foundation—gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13Each one’s work, shall be made, manifest; for, the day, will make it plain, because, by fire, is it to be revealed,—and, each one’s work, of what sort it is, the fire itself will prove:—

Berean · Standard Bible

12If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13his workmanship will be evident, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will prove the quality of each man’s work.

2 Timothy 3:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12Yea and, all who are determined to live in a godly manner in Christ Jesus, will be persecuted;

Berean · Standard Bible

12Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

7.13When I Am Weak, Then I Am Strong

Why would God leave us weak? “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” When we give up, God can flow through us. Like an overwound child who finally lets a parent hold him, we stop fighting. Our strength blocks His power.

The weakness of God is stronger than the strength of men, and the weakness of God was Christ hanging naked on the cross. It became the power to save anyone on earth.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

9And at once he said unto me—Sufficient for thee, is my favour, for, my power, in weakness, is made complete. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may spread a tent over me. 10Wherefore, I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in necessities, in persecutions, and straits, in behalf of Christ; for, as soon as I am weak, then, am powerful.

Berean · Standard Bible

9But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. 10That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

1 Corinthians 1:25

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

25Because, God’s foolish thing, is, wiser than men, and, God’s weak thing, mightier than men.

Berean · Standard Bible

25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

7.14Christ and Him Crucified

Preaching “Christ and Him crucified” did not mean every sermon was about the cross. It meant acting out total weakness every time: “I’m naked here. Unless You come and back up this message, it’s a human dud.” The same goes for the worship team, sharing Jesus, or sitting with someone who just lost a spouse.

1 Corinthians 2:2

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

2For I had not determined to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ,—and, him, as one who had been crucified!

Berean · Standard Bible

2For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

7.15The Gift of Suffering

It has been granted to us not only to believe in Him but also to suffer for Him. Suffering is the gift that keeps on giving: a broken heart learns to love. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom.” Must means essential.

When evil strikes, we still know whom we have believed. In everything give thanks, not for everything, because He works all things for good. After a little while of suffering, the God of all grace will restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you. That is a promise, not a maybe.

Philippians 1:29

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

29Because, unto you, hath it been given as a favour, in behalf of Christ, not only, on him, to believe, but also, in his behalf, to suffer:—

Berean · Standard Bible

29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him,

Acts 14:22

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

22confirming the souls of the disciples, beseeching them to abide in the faith, and [declaring] that, through many tribulations, must we enter into the kingdom of God.

Berean · Standard Bible

22strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

2 Timothy 1:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12For which cause, these things also, am I suffering; nevertheless I am not being put to shame, for I know him whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is, able, to guard, that which I have entrusted, [to him] unto, that, day.

Berean · Standard Bible

12For this reason, even though I suffer as I do, I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

18In everything, give thanks,—for, this, is a thing willed of God, in Christ Jesus, towards you:

Berean · Standard Bible

18Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:28

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

28We know, further, that, unto them who love God, God causeth all things to work together for good,—unto them who, according to purpose, are such as he hath called;

Berean · Standard Bible

28And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.

1 Peter 5:10

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

10Howbeit, the God of all favour—who hath called you unto his age-abiding glory in Christ—when, for a little, ye have suffered, Himself, will adjust, confirm, strengthen:—

Berean · Standard Bible

10And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore you, secure you, strengthen you, and establish you.

7.16If We Endure, We Will Reign

“We will reign with Christ” is a half-truth. If we endure, we will reign with Him. If we deny Him, He will deny us, and refusing to suffer is part of denying Him. Without cooperating in the test, we will never accurately know our own strength, faith, weakness or unbelief.

Martyrs sang in the flames. That is not human. It is faith that has matured. We do not need martyr’s faith today, but we need to be growing toward it. Like Jesus in Gethsemane, all we have is another yes: “Not My will, but Yours be done.”

2 Timothy 2:12

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

12If we endure, we shall also reign together; If we shall deny, he also, will deny us,

Berean · Standard Bible

12if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us;

Luke 22:42

Rotherham · Emphasized Bible

42saying—Father! if thou please, bear aside this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be accomplished.

Berean · Standard Bible

42“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”
